Council Announces High Adventure Campership Fund

The board of directors of Greater Cleveland Council at its June, 2012 meeting voted to create a $125,000 endowed high adventure campership fund. Some of the proceeds from the sale of the Tinnerman Wilderness Canoe Base were used to establish the campership fund – a fund which is expected to produce approximately $6,000 per year. Camperships will support Greater Cleveland Council Scouts and Venturers attending a BSA nationally owned and operated high adventure base (Philmont, Northern Tier, Florida Sea Base and Summit), National or World Jamboree. Information on how to apply for a high adventure campership, including an application, will be available on the council webpage by December 31, 2012. Camperships will be awarded beginning in 2013. Additional donations to the high adventure campership endowment may be made by contacting Patrick Craven at (216) 458-8913 or [email protected].

Tinnerman Sold

Today, the executive board of Greater Cleveland Council, Boy Scouts of America voted to unanimously accept a cash offer of $415,000 for the 10 acre property on the French River in Ontario, Canada that was the Tinnerman Wilderness Canoe Base. The purchase offer has no contingencies and is expected to be completed in early May 2012.

The canoe base began operations in 1962 after the Tinnerman family donated the property to the council. The base remained in operation for nearly 50 years. Declining attendance, increasing Canadian government regulations and other issues, compelled the council to cease operations. The canoe base has not operated since the summer of 2010 and the property was listed for sale in fall of 2011.

How the net proceeds from the sale will be used to support and enhance the Scouting program in our community has not yet been determined by the board.

A High-Adventure experience includes at least five nights and six days of trekking in wilderness and other rugged, remote locations. Trekking may include backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking, horse packing, mountain climbing, ski touring, rafting, kayaking, or a host of other outdoor adventures.

Outdoor adventure is the promise made to boys when they join Scouting. Boys yearn for outdoor programs that stir their imagination and interest.

In the outdoors, boys have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability. Attributes of good character become part of a boy as he learns to cooperate to meet outdoor challenges that may include extreme weather, difficult trails and portages, and dealing with nature's unexpected circumstances
