Starting today, Tennessee firefighters and EMS providers have stronger legal protections.

Thanks to the work of the members of Tennessee Professional Fire Fighters Association and the support of Senator Paul Bailey, Kip Capley and the lawmakers who stood with us, HB2428 is now in effect.

This new law makes assaults against firefighters and EMS providers a Class E Felony, bringing the penalties in line with assaults against law enforcement officers.

Every day, firefighters and EMS personnel answer the call without knowing what they will face. No one should be assaulted while protecting their community.

This is more than a new law, it’s a statement that Tennessee values and protects those who serve.

Thank you to every firefighter who advocated for this legislation, and to the legislators who helped make it a reality.

If folks only knew the depth of work we have done with and for the firefighters in our state. They have been one of the most consistent and cooperative groups when it comes time to communicate the needs of public safety and rescue. Some might call that a “special interest” but it is in ALL OF OUR INTERESTS to see those who serve us have the support to serve us well.

A few years back, they came to us not for pay raises or improved equipment but with a primary concern above all that. They needed help for their fellow firefighters who were not coping well with the trauma they encounter in the field. The Dustin Samples Act was named after a firefighter from our community who passed tragically from such distress. The firefighters asked us to fund a plan to get get the proper help to those who needed it. The help would not only aid keeping them alive for their families but hopefully get them back to work at a new normal.

The legislature took on the Samples Act as a legislative goal and we passed it in 2023.

Our firefighters care for one another. It’s a brotherhood/sisterhood. And you will find that constant across all our first responders in Tennessee.

Tomorrow, May 4th, is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a day that carries deep meaning across the fire service.

In recognition of , we pause to honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to stand alongside those who continue to answer the call every day.

Across Tennessee, our members show up no matter the hour, no matter the risk, committed to protecting life and property in their communities. This profession demands sacrifice, resilience, and a dedication that runs deeper than most will ever see.

As we mark this time, we ask you to keep our fallen in your thoughts, support those still on the line, and recognize the weight of what it means to serve.

We will never forget those we’ve lost.
And we will always stand with those who continue the mission.
