Coinage dies of the eighteenth century can reveal a great deal about the appearance of coins from that period. The one illustrated here, for a five guinea piece of George II, is interesting because it would have been used to strike coins without a restraining collar. The technique, known as splash striking, produces coins with distorted lettering and beading because the metal flows without restraint around the border of the design.

The distortion is apparent on currency pieces but not on proofs or patterns. Much greater care was taken over their production, employing dies with squared-off shoulders that allowed for a collar to be used.
