Today we went to One World Day. Wow, what a great experience to see so many people from numerous cultures come together at The Cleveland Cultural Gardens to celebrate their heritage. So many dancers, drummers, and traditional clothing. Everyone represented their culture beautifully… except one. Us, the Native American’s. Three people carrying a banner and three people sitting under a canopy at the Native American Garden. An area that has been bare for over 20 years. Then when Phil had a dream to add a sacred prayer area using the four sacred herbs that all Native American tribes honor (To***co, Sage, Sweet Grass and Cedar), and we do it in a sacred way, people from the community FREAK OUT. “You can’t do that… the city will fine us… who gave you permission to do that?” This is why nothing has been done with the Native American Cultural Garden in over 2 decades. As the men’s spiritual Elder for our group, a few years ago I gave to***co to the leaders of the other groups asking for a meeting to resolve issues. Their reply. Nothing. From everything I’ve seen, I don’t think things will ever change.
