Speaker Event Tuesday, March 8th! The Lakewood LWV Chapter and the LWV Greater Cleveland DEI Committee are partnering to bring a new program to League members and our communities.
At 7:00 P.M., March 8, 2022, Gayathri Chelvakumar, M.D. will facilitate an interactive presentation that will focus on the ways that transgender youth are affected by bullying and discrimination. She will also discuss how recent legislation has affected transgender youth and facilitate a discussion with the audience.

Speaker Bio: Gayathri (Gaya) Chelvakumar is an attending physician in the section of Adolescent Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital and an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Northwestern University and completed her pediatric residency, adolescent medicine fellowship, and Master of Public Health degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Clinically, she provides care to transgender and gender diverse youth as Co-Medical Director of the THRIVE Gender Development Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She also established and operates a medical clinic at a local drop-in center for homeless youth and is medical director of the Franklin County Juvenile Intervention Center medical clinic. As an educator, she has served as the rotation director for the adolescent medicine rotation for 7 years and is on the faculty for the World Professional Association of Transgender Health’s Global Education Institute. Her research interests involve health promotion and education in collaboration with community-based organizations, interventions to improve quality of life in transgender and gender diverse youth, and interventions to improve the health of justice-involved youth.
