I thought I’d share one of my papers from my African American Biblical interpretation class.

The Resilience of African Oral Legacy: Connecting Historical Narratives, Spirituality, and Social Justice

African culture has been deeply influenced by the power of oral tradition, serving as a vessel for the transmission of history, spirituality, and societal values. Despite the forced displacement of Africans as slaves and the subsequent attempts to erase their history, the oral legacy persevered as a means of preserving cultural identity. This paper explores the interplay between African oral tradition, historical experiences, and the interpretation of spirituality.

At the heart of African oral tradition lies the figure of the griot, a storyteller and historian tasked with preserving the collective memory of the community. The griot's role extends beyond mere narration; it encompasses the transmission of values, morals, and a deep connection to ancestral roots. In essence, griots serve as living repositories of history, ensuring that the cultural fabric endures through generations.

The forced migration of Africans to foreign lands subjected them to a harsh reality: severed ties to their history, language, and culture. Stripped of their identity, Black individuals were caught between the struggle to retain their African roots and the prohibition against embracing their American experience. This dichotomy formed the backdrop for the emergence of oral tradition as a powerful tool for cultural preservation.

In the face of oppression, African Americans found solace and inspiration in the Bible. The biblical narratives of liberation, such as Israel's deliverance, the three Hebrew boys, the resurrection of dry bones, and the crucifixion of Jesus, resonated deeply. Notably, the white portrayal of Jesus as a conqueror diverged from the black perspective, which saw Jesus as a Deliverer of the oppressed—a figure aligned with the African experience of suffering and liberation.

In African culture, answering questions through storytelling was commonplace, mirroring the approach of Jesus in the Bible. The shared experiences of marginalization and divine deliverance became central to interpreting both history and scripture. The oral legacy served as a bridge between the past and the present, fostering a nuanced understanding of the Bible in the context of African American history.

Today, as critical race theory faces opposition and attempts are made to erase the history of American slavery, the question arises: How can the interpretation of God and the Bible be meaningful without acknowledging the historical context of oppression? Laws attempting to remove slavery from history books threaten to sever the vital link between historical experiences and contemporary spiritual interpretation.

The interpretation of God and the Bible is a dynamic process that transcends traditional notions of higher and lower criticism. It necessitates a merging of biblical text with present experiences and social realities. For marginalized communities, the lens through which God and the Bible are viewed is inseparable from the lens of dehumanization and oppression, prompting critical questions about the continued relevance of God as the liberator of the oppressed.
In conclusion, the resilience of African oral legacy, embodied by the griot tradition, underscores the enduring connection between historical narratives, spirituality, and social justice. The erasure of history threatens not only the understanding of God and the Bible but also the ability to navigate the challenges of the present. As the saying goes, "If one doesn't know their history, how can they reach their destiny?" The oral legacy stands as a testament to the strength of storytelling in preserving identity, fostering resilience, and shaping interpretations of spirituality in the face of adversity.
