Today is the last day with students for the school year across both The Intergenerational School and Near West Intergenerational School, and we already know we are going to miss them.

Thank you to our students for bringing curiosity, creativity, kindness, humor, and energy into our schools every single day. You are the heart of these communities.

Thank you as well to our teachers, staff, administrators, families, learning partners, volunteers, and community supporters for making this such a meaningful and successful school year. It truly takes all of us.

This year was filled with growth, learning, friendships, challenges overcome, and moments we will remember for a long time.

We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing, and safe summer filled with family, adventure, reading, creativity, and rest. Enjoy every minute of it, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone back in the fall.

Watching you grow into thoughtful, capable, and resilient young people has been a privilege, and we cannot wait to see where your journeys take you next.

TIS will always be home to you. Whether you are coming back to say hello, visit former teachers, or share your future accomplishments, you will always have a place here within the Intergenerational Schools community.

We are proud of each and every one of you. Good luck in high school and in all that comes after.

Our Near West Refining students show that crafting is about far more than creating something with your hands. When students craft alongside older adults and community partners, they strengthen academic skills in authentic, meaningful ways.

Crafting across generations builds fine motor skills, problem-solving, sequencing, measurement, reading comprehension, listening, communication, and creativity. Students learn patience, perseverance, and how to follow multi-step directions while also hearing stories, perspectives, and life experiences that deepen learning far beyond a worksheet.

Research continues to show that hands-on learning improves memory, engagement, and critical thinking. Add intergenerational relationships to that experience, and students gain something even more powerful: connection, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging in their learning community.

These moments may look simple on the surface, but they are deeply connected to academic growth and lifelong learning.

As we wrap up another incredible school year at The Intergenerational Schools, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of our senior partners, community organizations, and intergenerational learning partners who made this year so meaningful for our students.

Your time, wisdom, patience, stories, encouragement, and presence helped create experiences our students will carry with them for years to come. The relationships built across generations are at the heart of who we are, and we are so thankful for every visit, conversation, project, and shared moment this year.

Thank you for helping us create a community where learning truly spans generations.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer, and we cannot wait to see you again in the fall for another amazing year together!

Yesterday, our TIS 8th graders took the stage for Shark Tank: Final Projects Edition, and they absolutely delivered.

This year’s challenge asked students to create an idea that would positively impact our school and/or community. Students presented their concepts to a panel of special guest “Sharks,” showcasing creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and confidence throughout the experience.

A huge thank you to our staff for coming out to support and encourage our students. Your presence meant a lot to them. This tradition has really grown into something the students look forward to each year.

One of our guest Sharks was former TIS student, Brice Peake, which made the event even more special. When Brice attended TIS, both Mr. O’Hara and Ms. Bell were part of his school experience, so it was a great reunion and a full-circle moment for everyone involved.

Congratulations to this year’s Shark Tank winners, creators of Blissful Bouncer. The judges were genuinely impressed by all of the student presentations and loved seeing the creativity, teamwork, and passion our students brought to the experience.

So proud of our 8th graders. They did an amazing job.

We’re grateful to have Dr. Tesha Fritzgerald partnering with The Intergenerational Schools to help strengthen planning and instruction through UDL, which stands for Universal Design for Learning.

Universal Design for Learning is a framework that helps educators proactively design instruction that is flexible, engaging, and accessible for all learners from the start.

Dr. Fritzgerald spent time working closely with our administrative team, conducting classroom observations and helping us reflect on instructional practices, student engagement, and ways to better support diverse learners across our school community.

We’re especially appreciative of the expertise she brings through her consulting, research, and her book, Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning: Building Expressways to Success.

Partnerships like this continue to push our work forward as we strive to create learning environments where every student can thrive.

Applying students at TIS recently brought literature to life by creating food truck stations inspired by foods connected to their favorite books. Students combined creativity, reading comprehension, collaboration, and presentation skills as they designed menus and shared the stories behind their selections.

One of the best parts of the experience was welcoming our younger learners to visit each station, explore the different books, and hear older students talk about the stories that inspired their creations. It gave younger students a glimpse into the kinds of literature and deeper reading experiences they will grow into as their skills and confidence continue to develop.

Projects like this show how literacy can become interactive, social, and memorable. Reading is not just about answering questions on a page. It is about connecting ideas, culture, creativity, and community in meaningful ways.

Near West Applying students recently spent time exploring the Rocky River Reservation and Nature Center in the Cleveland Metroparks, slowing down to notice the things we often overlook in everyday life. Through observation walks, journaling, and discussion, students practiced documenting patterns in nature, asking questions, and reflecting on the environment around them.

Experiences like this connect directly to 7th and 8th grade learning standards in science, English language arts, and social-emotional learning. Students are strengthening skills in scientific observation, evidence-based writing, descriptive language, reflection, and critical thinking while learning how ecosystems interact and change over time.

Learning outside the classroom creates opportunities that are hard to replicate indoors. Students build curiosity, attention to detail, mindfulness, and a stronger connection to the world around them. Sometimes the most meaningful learning starts by simply slowing down long enough to notice what has been there all along.
