💻 Join OCA for a virtual Open House & Member Meet-Up! Meet OCA leadership, connect with OCA members, and learn more about OCA’s Chapters, Divisions, and Committees.

🎙️ This event will kick off with an opening welcome and “State of the Association.” Attendees will then have the opportunity to participate in three 10-minute breakout rooms to meet with the OCA Chapters, Divisions, and Committees that are of interest to them. Or, feel free to hang back in the main Zoom room to chat with OCA leadership!

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the rich histories, cultures, and continued presence of Indigenous peoples and Nations across this land.

As counselors, part of our work is recognizing that mental health care isn't one-size-fits-all. Indigenous communities have long faced barriers to accessing mental health support — including historical trauma, systemic inequities, and a shortage of culturally responsive providers. Honoring this day means more than acknowledgment; it means practicing cultural humility, listening, and building trust with the communities we serve.

We're grateful for the Indigenous counselors, healers, and community leaders doing this work every day, and we remain committed to expanding access and understanding across our field.

It's October 11th! And that means it's National Coming Out Day 🏳️‍🌈 NCOD was first celebrated in 1988 in the spirit of feminist and gay liberation ideals of "the personal being political." This day continues to be celebrated to decrease the silence and ignorance surrounding LGBTQIA+ experiences, and functions as a basic form of activism through education and awareness.

Whether you're an openly out counselor, or providing affirming care as an ally, take a moment today to celebrate the authenticity of sharing yourself with others. Thank you for recognizing that the personal and the professional is political!

On Fridays we shine a light on the people and corners of our community doing the work. 🔦 This week: Victoria Frazier of the North Central Area!

You may know Victoria as a Host, Writer, and Producer of Ohio Counseling Conversations, but she also serves the President of the North Central Ohio Counseling Association (NCOCA). Victoria is an LPCC currently working in Westlake, Ohio in private practice. She primarily works with kids and teens, but enjoys her work with grown-ups and the opportunities they present to sit on the furniture instead of the floor. Victoria is excited to spearhead NCOCA's work towards creating opportunities for community, continued education, and advocacy for members of North Central!

Ohio counselors: how is insurance affecting you, your practice, and your clients?

OCA's Insurance Advocacy Committee has opened its Annual Insurance Advocacy Survey, and this year we're asking for more than numbers. We want the specifics: the denied claim, the recoupment letter, the credentialing delay.

Those details help us tell the story behind the data as OCA evaluates and supports legislation to improve insurance practices for behavioral health providers.

Who should respond: any Ohio counselor who works with insurance in any capacity, whether you're paneled, out-of-network, billing for a group, or supervising counselors who do.

Your privacy: anything used for advocacy will be de-identified first. Please leave client-identifying details out of your responses.

Pruning helps a plant thrive...but prune too much, too often, and you'll cut off the very things that were just starting to bloom.

You don't have to cut away everything that isn't perfect to grow. Sometimes the messy, unfinished parts of you are exactly what your clients need to see modeled.
