Some songs do in three minutes what we spend whole sessions working toward. 🎢

New Let's Unpack That: The Playlist Nobody Prescribed β€” the "accidental music therapy" of tracks that nail grief, self-worth, boundaries, and resilience without ever trying to.

Not a replacement for counseling, and not music therapy as a credentialed clinical discipline β€” just the pop culture side of why a chorus can feel like permission. ✨

LGBTQ+ affirming counseling is a skill set β€” one that takes training, ongoing learning, and a willingness to examine your own assumptions. It means knowing how minority stress shows up in the body. It means understanding why a client might not disclose their identity even after months of sessions. It means recognizing when the system β€” not the client β€” is the problem.
This week, OCA is spotlighting what competent, affirming practice actually looks like inside the counseling room. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

πŸ™Œ That's a wrap: Ohio Counselors Town Hall on Insurance Advocacy & Professional Action
Thank you to every counselor who joined us. This is work OCA has been doing for a long time β€” and your voices keep moving it forward.

A few highlights from the conversation:

πŸ“Š Since February 2025, OCA's Insurance Advocacy Committee has collected 28 provider submissions and 100+ pages of data, identified 17 common insurance and practice challenges, and shared those findings directly with OCA leadership, lobbyists, and policymakers.

πŸŽ‰ We celebrated real progress β€” including SB 162, which passed with unanimous support and now awaits the governor's signature β€” alongside ongoing CareSource clawback advocacy. Real momentum, with more work ahead.

πŸ—£οΈ We talked strategy: gathering counselor voices (members and non-members alike) to advocate for legislation and insurance reform, and making it easier to connect with committee chairs.

πŸ“’ We're asking Ohio counselors to oppose SB 274 / HB 172 β€” companion bills that would eliminate the exception allowing minors to seek counseling without parental consent (repealing ORC 5122.04). This change could create real barriers to care for the young people who need it most. Counselors: submit opposition testimony and contact your legislators to make our voice heard.

πŸ“£ Ways to plug in: get active in your chapter, division, or a committee; mark ACA Hill Day (Sept 16–17); and use the 5 Calls app to prep and call your legislators.

πŸ“… Save the date: our next GRC/IAC Town Hall is Friday, August 28 Β· 12–1 PM EST.

The issues are still evolving β€” and so is our response. Your voice helps shape the future of our profession and improves access to care for the clients we serve.

This June, OCA recognizes Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. πŸ’™

Too many men carry it alone. Only about 42% of men experiencing a mental health condition receive professional care β€” and men account for nearly 80% of all su***de deaths in the U.S. The barriers are real: stigma, the myth that struggling equals weakness, and the cultural message to "tough it out."

Counselors know a different truth: reaching out is strength. Healing is not a solo sport.

To the men in Ohio β€” you are worth the call, the conversation, the care. And to our fellow counselors β€” thank you for holding space where men can set the weight down. 🀝

Today we observe Juneteenth, commemorating the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas β€” more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of how long justice can be delayed.

As counselors, we know that liberation and mental wellness are inseparable. Historical and ongoing racial trauma shape the stories our clients carry, and healing happens in spaces where those stories are honored rather than overlooked.

Today, we reflect on Black history, Black resilience, and our shared responsibility to build a profession β€” and a world β€” where every client is seen, valued, and supported. πŸ•―οΈ

A reflection for our followers: How are you making room for these conversations in your work, and in your own continued learning?

There are counselors in Ohio who walk into every session carrying not just their training, but their own experience of navigating a world that hasn't always been safe.

That dual lens β€” clinical and lived β€” is a gift to this profession. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

OCA celebrates the LGBTQ+ professional counselors who bring their whole selves to this work. You make Ohio's counseling community stronger, more human, and more whole.

Tuesday Toolkit time. 🧰

Here's one for the back pocket: "What does a good day look like for you?"

It moves the conversation from problem-saturated to possibility-focused, and it lets your client be the expert on their own life β€” which, let's be honest, they always were.

File this one under "questions that earn their keep." πŸ’›

⏰ This Thursday: Ohio Counselors Town Hall β€” June 18, 9–10 AM (Virtual)

If insurance headaches have been keeping you up at night, this hour is for you.
OCA's IAC and GRC have been advocating on these issues β€” and as they keep evolving, so does our response. This Town Hall is the next step: bringing counselors from across Ohio together to talk through where reimbursement stands now and where our advocacy goes from here. On the agenda:

βœ”οΈ CareSource recoupment ("clawback") follow-up & response efforts
βœ”οΈ Alma reimbursement rate reductions
βœ”οΈ Antitrust education & advocacy limitations
βœ”οΈ Legal representation & strategic considerations
βœ”οΈ Legislative and regulatory developments affecting practice
βœ”οΈ Clinical integration opportunities + future advocacy priorities

Come for the updates, stay to ask your questions and weigh in on next steps. The agenda we set together becomes the agenda we advocate on.

🌿 Self-Care Sunday

"Closing the laptop is also clinical work."

The notes can wait. The inbox can wait. Your nervous system can't run on empty and still hold space for everyone who needs you Monday.

Rest isn't the reward for good clinical work β€” it's part of it. Protecting your own capacity is how you protect the people you serve.

So this is your permission slip: log off, look up, and let today be yours. πŸ’›

What's one small way you're closing the laptop today? πŸ‘‡

Happy Loving Day. πŸ’›

On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court's decision in Loving v. Virginia struck down laws banning in*******al marriage β€” affirming that the right to love, partner, and build a family belongs to everyone.

For counselors, this history sits closer to our work than it might first appear. We hold space for in*******al couples navigating outside judgment, multiracial clients making sense of identity and belonging, and families whose love has been questioned by the systems around them. The freedom to form the relationships that sustain us isn't separate from mental health β€” it's foundational to it.

So much of what we do comes back to belonging: helping clients feel seen in their relationships, supported in their identities, and safe to be fully themselves. When people are free to love and be loved, they're freer to heal.

To every counselor holding space for connection in all its forms β€” this one's for you. 🀍
