CSJO - Cultural and Secular Jewish Organization

CSJO - Cultural and Secular Jewish Organization Cultural Jews wanting to connect to their Jewishness through the history, culture, and ethical values of the Jewish people. A community that welcomes all Jews!

The Cultural and Secular Jewish Organization (CSJO) is composed of independent organizations that promote a secular expression of its members' Jewish heritage, with particular emphasis on the culture and ethics of the Jewish people. For us the continuity and survival of the Jewish people are paramount. The prophetic tradition of social justice and humanism is the foundation upon which our continui

ty is built. As Jewish organizations with a secular world view, we stress the historic, cultural, and ethical aspects of our Jewishness in an effort to create identity that is relevant to contemporary life and committed to justice, peace, and community responsibility. Although the Jews are a world people, with a multitude of views and beliefs, we hold that it is not only possible but also essential for Jewish survival that Jews with all different world views work together in Jewish community programs of mutual interest. Our schools, adult and youth groups function outside the framework of organized religion and carry out programs of education directed towards understanding our people's past and enriching our present Jewish lives. These programs include study of our tradition, history, literature, music, art, languages (Yiddish as a vital instrument of expression of a significant period of our history; Hebrew as it relates to modern Israel; and other Jewish languages created in the Diaspora). Creative approaches to holiday celebrations provide an opportunity to reflect upon our cultural and historic heritage and to relate their significance to present-day life. CSJO has ties with Jews everywhere in the world and are concerned with their welfare. We are hopeful that peace will come to the Middle East and to the State of Israel, which is home to a significant and vital part of world Jewry. Through educational, cultural, and social activities we hope to instill in our members an ever-deepening sense of Jewish identity, as well as pride in being Jewish. By supporting CSJO, you are helping to support an organization that stands for cultural Jewishness in its philosophy, celebration of Jewish holidays, Life Cycle events, and ethical values.

Here is another amazing workshop that will happen conference weekend! I am excited to register are you?

Workshop: “Music for Humanistic Jewish Holidays and Life Cycle Events”
Organizer: Brandy Sinco
Workshop Description and Goals. This workshop will be in two parts. During part 1, participants will have the opportunity to share music for holidays (Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Tubishvat, Passover, Purim, etc.) or for life cycle events (wedding, service of union, baby naming, memorial, etc.). The music sharing can be in the form of a live performance, recording, and reading from a score. Everyone involved in music is welcome: professional and amateur musicians, and listeners.
During part 2, we will discuss forming a network for people who are involved in planning music for Humanistic Jewish events. Hopefully, this session will become an annual CSJO event. I envision the network helping people with choosing music for observances and choirs, and helping to navigate technical issues, such as how to set up Zoom and the use of online streaming.

As our annual conference approaches we are gathering some amazing workshops. Here is a glimpse at one of our workshop, presented by Rabbi Adam Chalom.

“Social Justice in the Hebrew Bible?”
Many in the emergent “religious left” like to point to selected Biblical passages to justify their support for contemporary activism. Of course, the same Bible is also used to justify right wing policy positions. What should Secular Jews do with this mixed cultural inheritance to best further their social justice goals?
