The National Kidney Foundation has been an integral part of our life here in the Deka family. Ron and I both have family members that have suffered with chronic kidney disease and dialysis. My dad, my best friend growing up, and Ron's brother, Kevin, who is a kidney organ recipient June 1st, 2020!

I joined the board of advisors last year to assist in bringing awareness to chronic kidney disease and the advocacy and tools kidney patients and their caregivers have with the NKF. We walk every year as team Kevin's Hope. We walk for Kevin, his kidney donor, their family, our friends and family with CKD and everyone who is touched by this disease.

We are a few days away from the walk and really need a strong showing and team to support. We know many are far and not able to walk with us, so we ask you to walk on Sunday, June 11th wherever you can. Wear orange and send us some pictures! If you cannot walk or would like to also show your support with a donation, however large or small, we say thank you so much! So many people have kidney disease and you never know if or when you could be diagnosed.

The link to donate is below:

Hi Friends and Family!
We would love if you could join us and be a part of Team Kevin's Hope at the NKF Kidney Walk on June 11th! The walk has two distances, short and a little longer. You can also just enjoy the festivities at the Science Center and be a part of the team!
If you cannot join us, we ask for you consider a monetary gift of your choice. It could be $5, $10, any amount helps in the fight against kidney disease. As a member of the Board of Advisors, I am involved with bringing awareness to the community around us and all the wonderful events and education we provide. If you have any questions, please reach out to me. I would love to offer any assistance, insight and advise I can regarding CKD.
Thank you!

Everyday we are thankful and truly blessed for the chance of life that was given to Kevin. A beautiful gift that was given by someone in this world who wanted another person to have a chance to live. A true miracle.

We are so humbled to share the Deka Family story for kidney . For Kevin Deka (on the left), finding a kidney donor was a family affair. Kevin has lived with kidney disease for most of his life, being diagnosed at the age of 8. At 52, his kidneys no longer functioned. Kevin was on dialysis for six years, but that didn’t stop him from working full time or being a father to five children.

The man on the right is Ron Deka who is Kevin’s brother. Lisa is Ron Deka’s wife & is Kevin Deka’s sister in law, and she made it her mission to find Kevin a new kidney. After attending the NKF’s “Big Ask Big Give”– a seminar that coaches kidney disease patients on how to ask potential living donors for a kidney transplant while educating others about their disease – she decided to become Kevin’s advocate. Asking for a transplant can be a taboo topic that many kidney disease patients, Kevin included, typically shy away from.

After the Big Ask Big Give event, a family meeting was called. Lisa credits that meeting for really opening family members’ eyes, as some of them didn’t truly know what Kevin was going through. She also explained the importance of getting everyone involved and sharing Kevin’s story with their networks. “We need to be sharing Kevin’s story with friends, family, and organizations,” explained Lisa.
After the family meeting, Lisa created a page – aptly titled, “Kevin’s Hope.” She and her family, including her husband and Kevin’s brother Ron, shared the page to everyone they knew.

Thankfully in June 2020 Kevin got a kidney from a deceased donor & has been doing well ever since.
Today, the whole family is involved with the NKF in some capacity, working together to be health advocates. Kevin’s brother, Ron, is also very involved with the NKF through his company and is a passionate volunteer at many of their events.

Great news we have to share! Kevin received a donor kidney on Sunday, May 31st. We are so thankful and blessed by the unselfish act of an anonymous donor. Kevin is home, feeling great, looking even better and we are so happy for the true hero that gave him a new life!

Thank you to everyone that said a kind word, kept him and us in your prayer and offered unwaveringly to be a donor. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

We still ask you keep Kevin in your prayers for recovery, for acceptance of the new organ and no rejection and for your continued support. We are simply grateful beyond words.
