We hear it all the time: "Just vote."

And voting matters. But voting alone has never guaranteed political power.

What happens after people cast their ballots matters just as much.

District maps can be redrawn. Courts can weaken voting protections. And winner-take-all elections can leave entire communities without meaningful representation, even when they organize, vote, and show up in large numbers.

This isn't a new conversation. Legal scholar Lani Guinier spent decades challenging the idea that democracy is only about who gets the most votes. She asked a deeper question: Does our system ensure that everyone's voice is represented?

Today, more people are asking that same question.

What would it look like to build a democracy where representation actually reflects the people? Some point to ideas like proportional representation, where seats are allocated based on the share of support voters give. Others have proposed independent redistricting, ranked-choice voting, or multi-member districts as ways to make representation fairer and give more communities a voice.

No system is perfect. But if we want a democracy where every community has a real opportunity to build lasting political power, we have to be willing to talk about the rules that shape it.

The fight has never been just about casting a ballot. It's about whether our democracy allows communities, especially Black communities, to build and sustain political power.

What do you think would make our democracy more representative?

With Ranked Choice Voting, no one would need to make such an appeal, because there is no such thing as a spoiler. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the candidate with the fewest votes is removed and the second choices of the voters who supported that candidate are re-assigned.

Voters express their exact preference for the candidate they really support, and not the one they think can win.

WE did it! Yet another example of having our say when WE the people don't obey (in advance). Instead, we mobilized, wrote letters, phone banked, signed petitions, made lots of noise. Zen O Bia
