May in U.S. schools... when stress stacks, function shifts, and fatigue sets in. The biggest theme from the conversation: it’s not that educators don’t know what to do… it’s that there’s rarely space to actually do it all! Less initiatives. More clarity. Fewer moving parts. More breathing room. More TRUST! Still, amazing people keep showing up for kids in powerful ways. Thankful to all the wonderful folks who joined this convo. Always, shoutout to Dr. and The Neurosequential Network for the science that makes it all feel hopeful! https://youtu.be/w4J5nTcF0vY?si=f75n-QzTfhJOEDRl

Started the week with the students at VALE – Venture Academy of Leadership & Entrepreneurship and it was an absolute joy! The students, Laura M. Burke, M.Ed. and other staff at are doing so many amazing things and setting a bar for how we can create belonging and engagement in our schools. We had a lot of fun sharing about our journey as sisters, learners, those people who took every weird internship we could, and our experience with The Neurosequential Network. We can’t wait to see what amazing things these students do!

Teacher Appreciation Week! It is Teacher Appreciation all day every day in our work! The phenomenal teachers we have the good fortune to work with are the daily, relational, regulating, attuned presence that makes so much possible for young people!

We have the privilege of partnering with educators across the globe and what stands out isn’t just their skill - it’s their persistence. Their ability to show up again and again, even when the work is complex, even when the needs are immense, even when the outcomes aren’t immediate.
In the Neurosequential Model we talk a lot about pattern, regulation, and relationship. Teachers live this every day.
💕Ceating safety where there has been unpredictability
💕Building connection where there has been dysregulation
💕Holding belief for students who are still learning how to hold it for themselves

“People, not programs, change people.” -

Teachers are those people.

This week, and every week, we are grateful to stand alongside educators. Thank you for letting us partner in the work, learn from you, and witness your magic and the impact you have on young people and systems alike.

Yesterday was amazing! We came together as The Neurosequential Network community at The Neurosequential Model: Grounded & Growing in Arizona conference.

It was really special to be together in person- so much connection, shared learning, and genuine inspiration in the room. It was a reminder of what’s possible when people come together around a common goal- supporting youth, families and educators.

It was joyful to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new ones doing incredible work. Spaces like this spark the kind of collaboration that doesn’t just stay at the conference, it carries forward into real, meaningful systems!
and I are grateful to be part of this community and excited for what’s ahead!

Thanks for having us!!
🎙️We’re live with EP 40 of MINDBEAT: Regulating, Relating, and Reasoning: Applying the Neurosequential Model in Schools.

In this episode, Laine Whitaker, MSL, and co-host Laura Butler of Sacramento City Unified School District welcome Katie Lohmiller, DrPH, and Halley Gruber, program directors with the Neurosequential Model in Education (NME), for a conversation about bringing neuroscience into everyday classroom practice. Together, they explore how understanding brain development can transform educators’ interpretations of behavior, responses to student needs, and the creation of supportive learning environments. The discussion highlights common misconceptions about discipline and behavior change, as well as practical strategies schools can use to implement brain-informed practices that strengthen both teacher efficacy and student well-being.

This bottle of maple syrup means more than you’d think 🍁 It represents that something sweet and special about being onsite in schools.

Recently, during a partner-school visit, we were gifted maple syrup made by students at the school, where they tap the trees you can see from the classroom and boil it down in their own “Sugar Shack”. What a beautiful reminder that schools teach so much more than reading, writing, and math. They cultivate curiosity, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, community, and pride.
Now my own kids get to enjoy waffles topped with syrup made by students in another state and learn about the incredible, hands-on learning and magic happening in schools across the country. Pretty sweet 🤎
Grateful for educators who make learning meaningful in ways that last far beyond the classroom!

This course is built for educators who’ve completed the NME Trainer Program and are ready to move from training → to implementation.
Participants receive:
✔️ Coaching support
✔️ A clear PD scope & sequence
✔️ Ready-to-use slides and activities
✔️ Data tools + implementation protocols
✔️ A structured 3-month course with continued coaching

The impact?

“Ultimately, with this support…the NME work has led to stronger scholar-adult relationships, more consistent and proactive supports, and a school culture that prioritizes the development of the whole child.”

🌟 Early Impact Worth Celebrating 🌟
We’re excited to share early results from our first group of U.S. students who participated in the Neurosequential Model in Education ( ) Student Lessons—and the impact was powerful!
Teaching students about their own neurobiology gave them language and tools to better understand and regulate themselves—not just “survive and manage stress”.
100% of students reported…
🔸 they enjoyed the lessons
🔸found them useful
🔸would recommend them for other students
🔸gained new strategies to understand and manage their experiences

When students understand their brains, they gain power and safety!

Huge thanks to our amazing NME Advanced Trainers in Pennsylvania for your partnership and for bringing brain-based learning directly to students.
Big thanks to for his support and generosity with the content!
