Speaking up about what you want.
Building friendships and relationships.
Learning a new responsibility.
Participating in your community.
Making choices about your own life.

Independence doesn’t have to mean doing everything without support. Sometimes independence means having the right support so you can do more for yourself.

The destination isn’t the same for everyone. The important part is that each person has the opportunity to help choose where they’re going.

Employers: You may be overlooking talent.

Inclusive hiring isn’t about lowering expectations.

It’s about looking beyond assumptions to see what someone can do.

A successful job match starts with understanding the needs of the employer and the abilities, interests and strengths of the employee.

Sometimes a little support, a different way of teaching a task or simply an opportunity to demonstrate ability is all it takes for someone to thrive.

And when the match works?

An employer gains a contributing member of the team.

An employee gains experience, income, confidence and greater independence.

Opportunity is where talent gets the chance to prove itself.

Being heard matters.

For World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2026), we’re reflecting on something that reaches far beyond mental health: people deserve a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

For people with developmental disabilities, that can mean being included in conversations about employment, relationships, daily routines, community activities, goals and the support they receive.

Person-centered support begins by listening.

Not assuming.
Not deciding for someone.
Not starting with limitations.

Listening.

Because having a voice in your own life is an important part of independence, dignity and belonging.

People first. Disability second. Today that idea may sound obvious. It wasn’t always.

The self-advocacy movement grew as people with developmental disabilities began demanding something fundamental: a voice in decisions about their own lives.

In the 1970s, the name People First emerged from that movement, reflecting a simple but powerful idea: a diagnosis does not define a person.

People have preferences.
People have goals.
People have strengths.
People have something to say about where they live, how they spend their time, where they work and what kind of life they want.

That movement helped change the conversation from “What should we do for this person?” to “What does this person want for their life, and how can we support them in getting there?”

That shift still matters today.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” is a reminder of something we see every day: people with disabilities bring skills, ideas, dedication and unique strengths to the workplace.

Meaningful employment is about more than earning a paycheck. It can build confidence and independence, create connections, develop new skills and give people the opportunity to contribute to their community.

Throughout October, we’ll be celebrating the people, employers, advocates and ideas that have helped move us toward workplaces and communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute and belong.

Because talent deserves opportunity.
