Another week of summer camp is in the books. Reading and discussions took place EVERY day! [Reading is fundamental!] ☺️

We read about and discussed the Memphis, Tulsa, and Rosewood Massacres. The discussions were deep, and the children learned a lot. We ended the week on a good note, discussing the founding of Mound Bayou, MS on Thursday.

Today we went down to Mound Bayou and toured the museum. Mr. Herman Johnson, Jr. took the time to give us a tour and share stories about the town. Mr. Benjamin Montgomery and his son Isaiah were brilliant people. I repeatedly stressed to the children, as always, that enslaved and freed people may not have had resources, but they were and we are very creative.

We also got to see the Taborian Hospital where most African American babies were born in the Delta from 1942-1967.

Madea’s Place did not disappoint for lunch. The burgers and wings are VERY good.

A question from one of the campers that will stick with me: “Why can’t Black people work together?”

In 2025, Mississippi paid out $25 million through LIHEAP and an energy crisis intervention program, with all funds going directly to clients. Funding for the program increased this year.
