Community Groundwork

Community Groundwork Helping community college students become engaged, effective citizens through public service careers CG LEARNS
is a 20 hour workshop over 4 days.

Community colleges attract hard-working, determined individuals who embody quintessential American values. Yet, few serve in government institutions outside of the military, and fewer still ascend to positions of real influence. As polarization and economic inequality continue to tear the nation's social fabric, bridging the cultural and socioeconomic gaps between the government and the governed i

s more than a moral issue; it's a vital strategic necessity. The problem is not about lack of talent or interest but access and opportunity. Practical impediments like filling a work shift, finding childcare, or navigating the maze of political networks kept too many from participating in civic life. Community Groundwork's three-part program (LEARN, LINK, LIFT) demystifies the process. It addresses these real-life needs to ensure that being a civic citizen is not only the most important job, in the words of President Barack Obama, but it's also one that we all can afford. Topics include: Digital Storytelling, Fundraising, How to Organize, and Data. CG LINKS
matches students with mentors. Mentorships lessons and ideas that nurture knowledge and success. CG LIFTS
provides an opportunity for students to job shadow a candidate, local council member or community activist.

The Community Groundwork Newswriting Lab is back with another great story. Here, we have 's reporting on in Pomona. This family owned restaurant has been serving 100% vegan food for eight years now. Avoiding many ingredients traditionally found in Mexican-American food – including lard and refined carbs, such as flour tortillas and white rice – Borreguitas is focused on plant-based alternatives and offering healthy meals, according to co-founder Moni Torres. Link in bio for the full story. It's also worth noting, the beloved restaurant is in the running for Taco Madness. Voting is underway at lataco.com 🌮 🌯

On March 28, in partnership with Pitzer College, will host a fundraiser for two-year students interested in careers in civics and journalism. The event begins at 7 p.m. PT. Our students will be present. We will have guest speakers and snacks. Newsroom and political recruitment strategies often overlook two-year students. Since 2021, CG has trained 71 students. Many were placed in paid job shadowing opportunities, growing their professional networks. In December, we trained our first J-School cohort. They are shadowing reporters today. Meet our classes. Come. Learn more. Join the CG family. RSVP link in bio.

We have another Community Groundwork Newswriting Lab story hot off the presses. This time, Josh Henderson embeds with a local progressive group that's been holding weekly protests in Brea every week since March 24, 2025.

Josh is a journalism major at Mt. San Antonio College and reports for SAC Media. He's interested in producing and editing all types of media and becoming a public persona, and he was a joy to have as part of our journalism program.

The Indivisible 45, a grassroots progressive group based out of Southern California, has been holding consistent weekly rallies as part of a self-described effort to protect democracy and resist authoritarianism.

Our first Community Groundwork Newswriting Lab story is officially live. This is part of our student-led newsroom where graduates of our 2025 Journalism School partner with a veteran journalist to report, write and publish an original news story. This piece from Yulianna Arzate follows the largest open-ended health care strike in US history and how frontline workers in Ontario are pushing for change at Kaiser.

Yulianna is a communications major at Mt. San Antonio College and is interested in strategic storytelling as well as how communication shapes public understanding. We're honored to publish her piece, and we can't wait to see what's next for her career.

After more than four weeks on the picket line, nurses and health care workers at Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center have returned to work with negotiations still ongoing between the union and health care provider.
