At 21 years old Moon, one of our many Thoroughbred mare is now raising her FIFTH orphan foal with us. This time, an adorable Standardbred c**t with a face only a momma could love. And oh yes… that unmistakable Roman nose. ❤️
Roman noses in horses have long been associated with noble steeds, strong, intelligent, dependable, and kind. In the Standardbred world, that profile is often admired and even sought after, with many horsemen believing those bold-faced trotters and pacers go on to become gritty, fast, hard-working athletes.
Earlier this week we received word that the c**t’s biological mother was being hospitalized with what appeared to be a prepubic tendon rupture. This is a serious condition in pregnant mares where the abdominal wall can no longer properly support the weight of the pregnancy. These mares are often in significant pain and require intensive supportive care, especially after foaling.
When the c**t was born Saturday, we got the text everyone hopes for: mom and baby were stable and hanging in there. But as the days passed, it became clear that mom was struggling to keep up with the foal’s nursing demands while also trying to heal herself.
So the difficult but loving decision was made to bring in a nurse mare, allowing the biological mother the opportunity to recover without the added physical stress of motherhood. Our sweet Moon-pie to the rescue!
