Good evening & Happy Saturday, friends! This here is the newest Blue Jay in the backyard - we're callin' him lil Blue! 🤣

You may have noticed that we missed the ZEN yesterday. It was the first time we hadn't posted a video in almost a year (July 4th was the first) - over 300!

Lately, I've been finding myself exploring photography more. wildbirds has helped with that. It's also been consuming a bit more of my time. There have been nights when i'm falling asleep trying to put together a ZEN.

So, we've decided to pause zen for a bit, or at least dial it back. We're still going to do videos, but we hope that we also have more time to get to the video ideas we've had in the backlog.

and most importantly, OBV is not going anywhere - we're just going to cut back on the videos. Hopefully you like our photos as well.

And if you're looking for somewhere to share your photos with a group of kind bird lovers, we'd love to have you over at wildbirds. We've got friends sharing their birds from all over the world, which is truly something.

Good morning & Happy Thursday, friends!

Honestly never know what will show up in the backyard! I’ve seen them in the yard probably less than 10 times. I was getting ready to head in because honestly, I was striking out...

This is a White-breasted Nuthatch. They are one of the only birds that consistently walks headfirst down tree trunks. Most bark-foraging birds work their way up. The Nuthatch goes down. By approaching from above they can spot insects and larvae tucked under bark that upward-moving birds miss completely. It is not just showing off. It is a strategy.

Good morning & Happy Wednesday, friends!

This Blue Jay is no stranger to the backyard, but it's been hard to catch him at the watering hole! It's been mostly the sparrow show, which isn't a bad thing. Well, tonight Ole Blue showed up right before we closed up shop - "One more and we'll all go", he said.

Good morning and happy Taco Tuesday, friends!

The youngins have been showing up lately and this juvenile Red-winged Blackbird is one of our favorites.

The oldest recorded Red-winged Blackbird was 15 years and 9 months old. Banded in New Jersey in 1967, found alive but injured in Michigan in 1983, and released after recovering. This little one is just getting started, though.

Good morning and happy Sunday, friends!

Had a bird walk to get to yesterday morning but got up extra early to see if I could catch this little one first. Stepped outside and saw what looked like a weird bird with a reddish hue and some dots. Got closer and realized it was a juvenile Northern Cardinal. Did not stay long but we got the shot. Already planning to be up early again tomorrow. 😂

Juvenile Cardinals look nothing like their parents at first. No bold red, no clean markings - just that brown fuzz and a dark bill starting to come in. But look closely and you can already see that crest taking shape. Ol Red and Ms. Rubi's legacy right there on top of that pine tree.

This isn't a cliff, but we believe these are Cliff Swallows. I saw the other day where someone on wildbirds found some cliff swallows under this rad bridge. Then Andrew Riggs is like, “hey, I heard about some cliff swallows under this bridge”. So, we went. 😂🙌🏻🎉
