Old Bird Vibes

This morning, I was driving back from getting coffee and saw this beautiful Great Blue Heron perched on the top of the trees - the sun hittin’ just right as it overlooked the nearby pond.

Some of you know that I work from home, which is cool, but it also has downsides. Awhile back, I was going through a dark time and I decided to change my routine. Instead of getting up and walking 5 ft to the office, I would force myself to go out in the morning and “commute” - be a part of the world a little bit. I also wanted to bring some positivity to the world.

I started going in daily - either for coffee or to the local gas station. Saying please, thank you, holding doors, and practicing everything my grandparents taught me. I started learning the names of the people working behind the counters and hearing more of their stories.

They know me when I walk in now and I know their names as well. That little change really brightens up my day.

Anyway, it was a long way to say I saw a GBH on my way to work this morning, but I wanted to share. Hope you have a wonderful day, friends.

Happy Sunday! Today Meg and I got back out there and went on a bird walk. I'll be honest - it started off pretty rough.

First, I realized I was out of battery and didn't have the backup with us - or the external charger. So, we left the camera in the jeep for a bit to get as much of a charge as we could.

Then, we'd gotten separated on the trail. When we met back up, I told Meg to watch out for this big pile of 💩 right in the middle of the trail. Then I said, "Looks like someone already stepped right in it". Then I realized that someone was me. Looking up for a bird instead of looking down. So, couple lessons learned today friends...

We did get a lifer though :) Persistence. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

We believe this is a juvenile or non-breeding Pied-Billed Grebe.

Happy Friday, friends! We’re absolutely blessed to have Cardinals show up here almost daily. Probably around 8, if I had to guess.

This is one of the younger ones, just learning her way around and being extra cautious.

Good evening and Happy Taco Tuesday, friends! It's been a couple weeks, but it had been about a month since we've actually got out and went birding.

So, Saturday we were on a mission to get out in mother nature, test a new app feature, and hang out with some birds! We saw so many Eastern Bluebirds, but we also noticed this Downy Woodpecker with the sun shining in just perfectly so we stopped and watched the journey a bit more.

And then, there was the Northern Mockingbird - living up to it's name and mocking other birds like the Blue Jay 😂

Happy Thursday, friends! I wanted share a few more of the juvenile Ruby-Throated Hummingbird that’s been hanging around.

From what I’ve read, they won’t get that ruby throat until their first migration, but I have seen some.

You may remember that last month, we got a new hummingbird feeder from Coppervine Feeders. Well, I'll be honest, we haven't been as consistent as we should with putting it out.

The other day, I was out on the patio and this fella zipped around my head and looked me right in the eye. At first, I felt guilt, but I knew exactly what we had to do.

We got in the kitchen and whipped up a batch of Meg's Famous Hummingbird Nectar and put it back out. This juvenile ruby-throated hummingbird has been on the feeder non-stop.

Last year, we really wanted to try and bring in some American Goldfinches which happened. This year we really wanted a Baltimore Oriole and a Hummingbird. We did not get the Oriole, but we'll keep trying.

Persistence, friends! Hope your Labor Day weekend was wonderful.

Happy Sunday, friends! I told you I had some molt photos coming - Ole Red and Ole Blue have definitely seen better days. Hopefully that last heat wave was it for us here in Ohio 🤣 They'll be back to "normal" soon!

Happy Saturday, friends. Here’s a few shots from last night. The Eastern Kingbird was a surprise visitor to the backyard. It actually stayed for a bit so I was able to get a decent shot even tho it was at the very top of the maple tree 🤣

The other birds have been going through their summer molt. This Cardinal isn’t looking too bad but I’ll post some molt shots soon. Meg is not a fan of those, but I had no idea about bird molting before I got into this and think it’s good to share that knowledge.

I know the MoDos are always one of Linda’s favorites ❤️ love the colors in that shot.

How about a goldfinch to brighten our Monday? I’m thinking this is a juvenile, but I’m not 100% there.

The weather has been fall-like here in Ohio and I’m kind of diggin’ it! Who knows maybe a bird walk this weekend?! 🤷‍♂️

Meg sent this to me the other day and I thought it was pretty neat. Although more local to Cincinnati friends, it's a great inspiration for everyone - including me.

Artist and graphic designer Mike Gertz has launched the "Loveland Bird Search," a downtown Loveland, Ohio scavenger hunt featuring over 100 hand-painted miniature birds hidden across 30 local businesses, parks, and restaurants.
