Jacqueline Winston Presents Her Indigenous Patriot, Nanye'Hi (Nancy Ward).

The Attucks-Lee-Banneker chapter is honored to share this powerful presentation by Jacqueline Winston, MO Daughter and NSDAR National Vice Chair for E Pluribus Unum: Education.

Mrs. Winston tells the story of Nanye'Hi - also known as Nancy Ward, the Beloved Cherokee Woman - her courage, diplomacy, and enduring legacy during the Revolutionary era.

Mrs. Winston was the Attucks-Lee-Banneker keynote speaker at the Rediscovered Patriots event the chapter hosted at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on Sunday November 16, 2025.

This recording is part of the Attucks-Lee-Banneker Chapter's ongoing mission to illuminate Rediscovered Patriots through education, patriotism, and historic preservation.

The chapter looks forward to sharing this resource with students, community members, and DAR chapters across Ohio and the National Society.

Thank you to Mrs. Winston for such an inspiring presentation.

Shroder High School Genealogy Pilot Program.

In partnership with Shroder High School and history teacher Mr. Craig Rush, the Attucks-Lee-Banneker Chapter, NSDAR, launched a pilot genealogy program designed to help students connect classroom history with their own family stories. This initiative introduces students to the fundamentals of genealogical research--using historical documents such as birth records, census data, and Freedmen's Bureau archives--to trace family lines and understand how personal heritage intersects with the nation's shared history.

Through guided instruction and hands-on activities, students will learn how to gather and analyze records, document findings, and explore how their ancestors contributed to local and national history. The program's goals are for students to research, write, and present a segment of their own family narrative to the class in February, showcasing the historical connections they uncover.

The pilot serves as an educational bridge between past and present, fostering family engagement, pride, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation of historical preservation. This collaboration also reflects one of the ongoing missions of the Attucks-Lee-Banneker chapter and the commitment of DAR to support educators and inspire young historians to uncover and honor their heritage.

Thank you to chapter members: Karen Dalton, Michelle Cousins Wherry, and Lisa Schumann for volunteering your time, expertise, and encouragement that help make this learning experience possible.

Indigenous Peoples Day Convergence at Hoffner Park in Northside (Cincinnati, OH)

Event Information:
Indigenous Peoples’ Day helps to correct the false narrative that Christopher Columbus discovered America (Indigenous People were already here), and puts the focus on America’s first inhabitants and the Tribal Nations that continue to thrive today.

It was instituted in Berkeley, CA in 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas. Though not a Federal holiday, it has been adopted by many other US cities and states.

The day is an opportunity to learn about and honor the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples. In Greater Cincinnati, this includes the Shawnee, Miami, Delaware, (Lenni Lenape), Potawatomi, and Wyandot peoples. Indigenous Peoples’ Day amplifies the voices of Native communities, uplifting Indigenous excellence in areas like environmental stewardship, health, connection to the land, Indigenous foods, and native ancestry.

Led by the Urban Native Collective, the theme of this year’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day Convergence is Ancestral Visions, Future Dreams.

This 4-day celebration will conclude in Hoffner Park on Monday with the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Feast. Everyone is encouraged to bring a traditional dish from their respective cultures to share, eating utensils to reduce waste, and a blanket/lawn chair. This event will take place 4-8pm, and Copper Face United Powwow Troupe will perform at 5:30pm.
