Mark W Shafer Memorial Golf Outing

Mark W Shafer Memorial Golf Outing Golfing to support organizations that focus on finding better treatments and drug therapies for Glioblastoma, which is the most aggressive brain cancer.

This is in memory of Mark W Shafer, who died of Glioblastoma after only 9 months at the age of 56. Mark W Shafer was full of life. He was extremely intelligent with the best sense of humor. He was ambitious, competitive, kind, generous, and he loved his family fiercely. But on July 25, 2021, Mark was diagnosed with glioblastoma. This was just 7 weeks after an ER visit on May 29, 2021 showed a clea

r CT scan. Mark had a craniotomy a couple of days after diagnosis to remove a baseball size tumor in his right frontal lobe. Even though the surgeon said he got 98% of the tumor, Mark still passed away a short 9 months later on May 13, 2022. To put in perspective of how deadly glioblastoma is, we were given the diagnosis from an ER doctor who was literally crying as she tried to explain the severity of what had been found on the MRI. It was clear from the beginning that even the medical community lacked hope for survival. Needless to say, it makes the battle even more difficult to fight when the goal was to simply try and extend Mark's life by a few months...as opposed to believing that modern medicine could possibly save his life. Our family needed better treatment options for Mark. Our family needed HOPE!! Our goal for the MWS Memorial Golf Outing is to support the Glioblastoma Foundation to transform glioblastoma therapy. We want to help someone else that has yet to face their battle against glioblastoma.

Funding is essential to research and discovery!!

National Brain Tumor Society is proud to join a coalition of philanthropic partners —led by The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research and The Sontag Foundation – committing $4 million to support five innovative glioblastoma research projects.

These studies will explore new approaches to understanding tumor biology, identifying new therapeutic targets, and improving immunotherapy strategies for brain cancer.

Collaborations like this help accelerate discoveries and bring new treatment possibilities closer to patients and families facing glioblastoma.

Our donation has been posted on the Glioblastoma Foundation Team Page. Our fundraiser is in the Top 5 team fundraisers, not counting our last 2 years of donations (because I created separate teams each year)!!!

My gosh, how in the world do we express our gratitude to everyone that participated and donated?? All we can say is simply....THANK YOU! We truly have learned that in the midst of a devastating loss, there is a light that shines from those around you providing much needed love and support....and our family has felt that for 3 years now!♥️

The National Brain Tumor Society started funding UCLA's research back in July 2023 to study the possibility of an antibody-drug conjugate to overcome methods of cell-death resistance of glioblastoma. This moving into a clinical trial means progress and hope! 🙏

NBTS-funded research at UCLA has advanced into a clinical trial targeting glioblastoma’s resistance mechanisms.

Since there is so much excitement with the Reds battling for a wild card playoff spot, it reminds us of Mark’s love of baseball! The Reds were always on the TV in the summer…and we made every effort to attend as many games as possible. The first picture was after his craniotomy in September 2021, when the Reds were also battling for a wild card spot (but lost out to St Louis). Sadly, that was the last baseball game he attended. But we are confident Mark continues to cheer on the Reds from above!❤️⚾️🥰

"A new chapter is coming"....that is exactly what we want to hear! 🙏🙏

Every glioblastoma tumor is genetically unique, making it harder to treat and nearly impossible to predict.

That’s why genomic testing is so important. It gives doctors a clearer picture of your tumor and helps guide more informed, personalized treatment decisions.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?

A new chapter is coming. We’re building a better path forward for glioblastoma care.
