Today marks nine years since my firstborn daughter, Antavia Lee-Worsham, passed away due to the high cost of insulin. Antavia was a vibrant young woman who loved her family, graduated from high school, and worked hard, but she lost her life less than a year after aging out of her secondary health coverage because she was forced to ration her insulin.
In her memory, I have dedicated myself to protesting and speaking with legislators to combat pharmaceutical price gouging. While insulin remains unaffordable for many, our efforts have led to meaningful change. I am proud to share that we are now recognizing Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) Awareness Day in Ohio and Hamilton County.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Former Mayor Cranley and Senator Hearcel Craig for the proclamation in Antavia's honor. I am also grateful to the many legislators who worked to increase the age requirement for the Children with Medical Handicaps (CMH) program, ensuring more young adults have access to the care they need.
Sincerely,
Antoinette Worsham
