Assisted living. Independent living. Memory care. Skilled nursing.

We hear these terms all the time, but they don’t all mean the same thing.

And during National Assisted Living Week, that distinction is worth talking about. 💚

Senior living includes many different kinds of communities and different levels of support.

Assisted living generally provides housing, meals, community life and help with some everyday activities while allowing residents to maintain as much independence as possible.

But there’s something the terminology doesn’t always capture.

A community is made up of people before it’s made up of programs.

People with careers behind them and plans ahead of them.

People with favorite records, strong opinions, inside jokes, friendships, families and stories we haven’t heard yet.

Through Soul Music for Seniors, we have the privilege of entering many different senior-living environments.

The music may be what brings us through the door, but every visit gives us another opportunity to understand the people and communities behind these familiar terms.

That’s part of what National Assisted Living Week is worth celebrating.

🎶 Please help us officially welcome Jameze Latrail to the Soul Music for Seniors team! 💚

As Soul Music for Seniors grows, we’re being intentional about the musicians we bring alongside us.

Talent matters—but so does alignment.

We want artists who understand that this work is about more than performing a set. It’s about connecting with people, listening, adapting to the room and creating musical experiences that feel genuine and personal.

After sharing about six SMFS musical experiences with us, Jameze is officially joining our team as one of our Senior Music Ambassadors.

Jameze is a Cincinnati vocalist, songwriter, producer, keyboardist and bandleader whose versatility has already been on full display. 🎹🎤🎶

Most recently, he spent time with a wonderful group of seniors in Western Hills, playing keys, singing and DJing throughout the afternoon.

As we continue to grow, we’re building a team of musicians who bring different gifts, personalities and musical perspectives while sharing the same commitment to serving our senior communities well.

Jameze has already been doing the work. Now it’s official.

It’s National Assisted Living Week—but do you know how it started? ✨

National Assisted Living Week was established in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living as a time to recognize the residents, families, staff, volunteers and communities that make assisted living special.

The celebration begins each year on National Grandparents Day, and this year it runs September 13–19.

The 2026 theme is “Shining Through the Years.”

Here at Soul Music for Seniors, we’re fortunate to spend a lot of time inside senior communities—sharing music, conversations and experiences with the people who call these communities home and the professionals who serve them.

So this week, we’re going to take you a little deeper.

We’ll talk about what assisted living actually is, introduce some of the people who make these communities work, share some of the music and stories we encounter, and celebrate the lives being lived inside senior living every day. 🎶💚

Some of my favorite moments happen after the music starts and the room begins to change.

A familiar song. A smile across the table. Somebody singing along. Somebody getting up to dance. A conversation with someone I may not have known before I walked in.

That’s what Soul Music for Seniors is really about.

The music brings us together, but the connection is the part that stays with me.

A conversation in the hallway.

A quick photo after the music.

A few minutes sitting beside someone.

A laugh.

A familiar face.

The performance may bring us into the community, but the individual moments are often what stay with us.

There’s so much more to a story than any picture can show. 💚

A lifetime of places, people, work, family, celebrations, hard seasons—and music woven through all of it. 🎶

That’s something we value about spending time in senior communities.

Every face carries memories, experiences and chapters we may never see in a photograph.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is take the time to listen.
