The adolescent students at Meridian Micro Farm have been busy with fall planting, exploring entrepreneurship, collecting and analyzing data, and participating in the daily work of the micro farm. It's all part of developing real-world skills through meaningful, hands-on learning.

October is National Farm to School Month. We appreciate the goals this initiative highlights.

At Meridian Micro Farm, our approach begins from a different premise. Rather than building farm-to-school experiences around an existing educational model, we've designed an adolescent community where meaningful work, entrepreneurship, and community partnerships are integrated into daily life. That continuity gives adolescents the time to develop responsibility, ownership, and a genuine sense of contribution.

More than a gardening class.

During the first few weeks of the regular school year, students have been planning a late-season growing experiment, preparing seed starters, and collecting and graphing data.

They’re also beginning to explore microbusiness and build the decision-making and self-management skills that will guide their work throughout the year, including how they use their time, approach responsibilities, and determine what needs to happen next.

There is more than one way to do middle school.

For families reconsidering what they want the middle school years to look like, the choices do not have to be limited to a conventional school setting or spending the day at home in front of a computer. Adolescents need intellectual challenge, but they also need meaningful work, responsibility, and real participation in community life.

Meridian Micro Farm is looking for volunteer community collaborators and guest experts who would enjoy sharing practical skills with adolescents.

This could include sewing, cooking, seasonal skills, or other meaningful areas of expertise. We’re especially interested in people who might enjoy offering a one-time workshop or occasional session that complements our students’ ongoing work in gardening, urban agriculture, and entrepreneurship.

Adolescence is a distinct stage of development, and education should reflect that. At Meridian Micro Farm, increasing independence, responsibility, and participation in the wider world are built into the adolescent experience.

Prince George started at Eton College on Tuesday, as the future British king followed in the footsteps of his father, the heir to ​the throne Prince William, by attending the prestigious 600-year-old school.
