She fled religious persecution, built a life in south Texas, raised four American children, and spent decades serving her community as a court interpreter. Meenu Batra has been here legally for over 35 years — and now she's sitting in a detention center, staring at the wall, with no explanation and no answers. Her story deserves to be heard. Mother and child held in notorious Rio Grande Valley detention centre despite presenting visa

“Don’t go anywhere near a checkpoint, and if your papers are in processing, just lay low. Trump meant what he said – he is trying to get rid of everyone, whether they are good or bad,” said Tania Warner, 47, who is currently held with her autistic daughter, Ayla, at the Dilley immigration processing center in south Texas.

Let this be your reminder that you can control how you show up every day.

You can choose to be kind when it’s hard.
You can choose to care when it’s easier not to.
You can choose to love people fully, even in an imperfect world.

That’s how things start to change.

Not all at once. But one person at a time.

Before ending up in immigration detention, Caleb and his brother Antonio were celebrated mariachi musicians from McAllen — invited by their Republican congresswoman to perform at the Capitol and visit the White House. Antonio had even been crowned the best trumpeter in Texas. But inside the Dilley detention center, the family of 12 slept in one room under lights that never turned off and were served food infested with worms. The contrast is impossible to ignore.

Ms. Khanbabai, 54, regularly travels to places where the rule of law is flimsy and the possibility of violence looms large — China, Egypt and Lebanon, among others. She remembers thinking she could be picked up off the streets by security forces and nothing could be done to help her.

This year, it started happening in the United States as the Trump administration targeted students involved in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. In March, Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder, was arrested in New York and rushed to a Louisiana jail. The same month, another legal resident, Yunseo Chung, went into hiding to escape ICE. Two weeks later, Ms. Ozturk, a 30-year-old Tufts graduate student wearing a hijab, was in the midst of a phone call when she was arrested on the street, and escorted toward a dark government vehicle.

Hazaa Alabdullah, who immigrated to Ohio from Syria four years ago, brings food every week to the English class he attends —feeding everyone simply out of kindness.

From listening to the moon landing on a village radio to visiting the Neil Armstrong museum in Ohio, his story is a beautiful example that gratitude, hospitality, and hope travel with us wherever we go.
