Our hearts go out to the families, children, and community members affected by the tragic school shooting at Feather River Adventist School in Oroville yesterday.

Events like this are hard for everyone, but they can be especially overwhelming for young children. Kids are still learning how to handle big emotions, and yesterday’s tragedy may feel scary and confusing for them.

Cloverleaf Family Counseling provides specialized help for young children and their families. They offer free therapy services, including Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP). This program is designed to support families in healing after stressful or traumatic events. To learn more about CPP, please visit https://first5butte.org/assets/resources/CPP.jpg. or visit their website at https://cloverleaffamilycounseling.com/

Even if your family wasn’t directly involved, it’s normal to feel unsettled or anxious after such a frightening event. There are resources available to help you and your family work through these emotions:
-The School Crisis Center – https://www.schoolcrisiscenter.org/
-The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) – https://nctsn.org/
-"Once I Was Very Very Scared" book on navigating scary feelings – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0998412619/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
-Your child’s school district – Contact them to learn about support services.

As a part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we want to shine a light on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are highly stressful and potentially traumatic experiences that can happen to any of us before we turn 18, this includes abuse, neglect, and other negative household challenges. Screening for ACEs to assess the risk of toxic stress and effectively responding with evidence-based, trauma-informed care across sectors, can significantly improve the health and well-being of individuals and families for generations to come.
