On July 14th, our Executive Director was asked to give a presentation at the Sustainable Events Collective's Beach Sweep event. Katherine presented on Sustainable Living 101, which details easy ways that every person can reduce their environmental impact in their daily life. This presentation goes beyond the obvious methods, and includes a lot of home utility and consumption choices. It also details options specific to the Chicagoland area, many of which are accessible on our website's local resource pages. She has given the same presentation for many groups, in a "pop quiz" format that encourages people to participate.

Although the individual isn't the one who should shoulder the full blame for our current climate crisis, the reality is that our individual choices are the thing we have the most control over in the short-term. One person can also spread the word to a lot of other people - converting whole families, neighborhoods, or communities to live differently. We strongly believe that individual consumption changes should be paired with policy advocacy and broader political action, because they are the pathways to long-term change. That said, meaningful legislation can take a *long time* to be enacted, so we find that providing information about how a person can address their own environmental impact TODAY can be very empowering. These personal changes build up a core knowledge base that is a catalyst for higher-level environmental activism. The fight against the climate crisis isn't an "either/or" debate, it's a "both/and" battle. 🙌 🌍

Chicago Environmentalists has been growing, and we wanted to highlight some of our new team members! Alex Kuban is a member of our new Website Research Team. He lives in Bridgeport and graduated from Illinois Tech this past May with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an ME in Environmental Engineering. He also has a professional background in STEM education and both climate and wastewater research. He joined Chicago Environmentalists to help increase awareness of sustainability in Chicago and to bring his technical and educational background to the organization. He loves finding sustainability efforts in every corner of our city, but also enjoys playing soccer, visiting museums, building LEGO, and nerding out on Marvel and Star Wars! Thanks for joining us Alex!

That’s a WRAP on the first-ever Chi Climate Week , and it was a gigantic success!! This inaugural event brought together so many people from different sectors of our community, all for the purpose of envisioning a greener future and taking action on climate issues. Special thanks to Mackenzie Siren and Jacob Moeller for leading the charge on this, and to everyone who contributed to the event through planning, volunteering, hosting, attending, donating, sponsoring, or something else!!

As an organization, we attended and hosted several events, but unfortunately forgot to take pics/video at a few of them (Woops!) Here are some of the great events we were involved in:

Can you guess who we’re standing with in this pic? If you guessed Jack Johnson , you would be correct! We were given a huge opportunity to table at his concert on Northerly Island this weekend, and of course we had to take it.

We were impressed by all the moves Jack and his team are making to make their tour sustainable and support local environmental nonprofits everywhere they go! There was signage telling people how to take action locally, which was awesome. All of the nonprofits that tabled at this event received gifts including tickets to auction off or give away, direct donations, and donation matches from his foundation, All At Once. Jack is leading the way for musicians - showing that it is possible to have a huge event that celebrates music and togetherness, while keeping the planet in mind. Jack even spoke to us directly before the concert, and we got to meet him briefly. His legacy will be far greater than just his music, and we hope more artists take note.

Additionally, we chose to auction off the concert tickets we were given, and our winners are shown here! Lisa Moore Mysker

Thanks again to All At Once for reaching out to us! Nicole Stratman | Impactful Travel & Events and I had a great time at this event. ❤️☮️🌎
