It's officially August, which can only mean one thing.....THE RETURN OF THE AUGUST ZONE BATTLE!!!! And that means... based on where our membership lives, we are pitting the North Side against the West and South Sides to see WHO CAN PICK UP THE MOST TRASH BY THE END OF THE MONTH! The West + South Sides won by a huge margin last year. Which team will reign supreme in 2026!?!?! And which individuals will pick up the most trash and win cool prizes!?!? Only time will tell, grabber goblins!!! Here are the competition rules:

1) You must be a Cleanup Club member to participate! To become a member, please visit our website and fill out the form at the bottom of the page. https://www.chicagoenvironmentalists.org/cleanupclubchicago

2) You must take photos of your litter haul and tell us how many bags you filled + where you did the cleaning! Posting in our Facebook group is best because you can “trash talk” the other team! We also accept IG tags and DMs.

3) Litter picking cannot be part of an organized group event - it’s intended for individuals (or a few individuals) doing it whenever they have time.

4) We define the North Side as anything north of Madison St and East of I-90. West Side is anything west of I-90 and North of Madison St, and South Side is anything South of Madison St. We know not everyone agrees on these boundaries, but they are the best we could do based on city data and member surveys.

More info on the prizes coming soon litterologists!

We're headed back to McKinley Park, and collaborating with our friends N4EJ and Bridgeport Environmentalists!! This area around an abandoned train track was a doozy last year, so we need all the help we can get friends! We found a whole bunch of what we call "litter lasagna," aka layers of trash embedded in the soil over, so that when you pull up one piece, you just keep finding more beneath it. We'll be covering lunch at Base Cafe afterward for all volunteers, as a reward for a great community effort! Be sure to register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1993984387981?aff=oddtdtcreator

New location just dropped! We're heading to Lakeview, and will be meeting on the corner of Addison and Ravenswood to cover the surrounding blocks. Afterward, we'll head to Bartleby's, who will be providing free scoops for all volunteers!! Thanks so much to Bartleby's for this generous and delicious reward for our hardworking community members.

We're excited to announce that we have a new Cleanup Captain, and her name is Jalyn! Jalyn is a proud Brighton Park resident who is excited to be part of Cleanup Club Chicago. She believes that caring for our neighborhoods starts with showing up for them, and that even small acts of service can make a meaningful difference. Jalyn works in the hospitality industry and loves connecting with people. In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and exploring Chicago with her boyfriend (who is also a cleanup captain!) She's grateful for the opportunity to give back to the city she loves and looks forward to helping inspire others to care for Chicago—one cleanup at a time.

Please give Jalyn a warm welcome!

16th Street, we meet again!! Chicago gave us a beautiful day to clean up this area for the 6th year in a row, and we made the most of it! Gathering 40 volunteers, we covered at least 5 blocks of this mural-covered area, and collected about 46 bags of trash and recycling. Strange finds included a huge plastic shoe that might have been a vase(??), a brand new Costco hat (which we kept, tyvm) and an animal skeleton.

Thank you to Alderman Byron Sigcho-López and Byron Sigcho Lopez for continuing to work with us and for covering the cost of lunch for our awesome volunteers! Additional thanks to The Urban Canopy and RADIUS for sponsoring this event, and Independent Recycling Services for providing recycling bins and pickup! Lastly, thanks to our captains, Bennett, Neil, Anthony, Ilana, and Jonathan, and to El Mezquite for feeding us!!!

Last year's co****le tournament was HEATED! This year, we have lowered the price to $30 per co****le tournament spot and have made it a standalone item so you can purchase them separately, even if you already bought an admission ticket. Keep in mind that there will be two person teams, and the winning team will get a $200 prize, a trophy, and the right to be a Bragasaurus Rex all night long! We still have lots of these tickets left, so if you’re interested in playing for a good cause, be sure to buy them here: https://givebutter.com/c/2026-birthday-party-fundraiser-ijy067

Thanks to our sponsors for this event, The Urban Canopy, Chicago Residential Partners, Ferdi Foundation, and Eco Chic Events.
