Meet Michiyo Suzuki on April 24th 7:30-9pm at

Clarinetist Michiyo Suzuki is a versatile clarinetist based in New York City, known for expressive playing in contemporary, classical, crossover, experimental, and microtonal genres. Her technical precision and musicality enliven diverse repertoires, from classical to electro-acoustic and microtonal works. She studied with renowned clarinetist Charles Neidich at Purchase College Conservatory, earning an MFA, and continued in the DMA program at SUNY Stony Brook. In 1996, she debuted at Carnegie Recital Hall as a winner of the Artist’s International award. She has performed extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, appearing with ensembles such as the Grammy-nominated Absolute Ensemble (as a core member), NY Licorice Ensemble (as a cofounder), Composers Concordance, ST-X Xenakis Ensemble USA, and Newband. Through the Absolute Ensemble, she has collaborated with legendary figures including Joe Zawinul and Marcel Khalife. With Newband, she mastered the fingerings needed to perform on Harry Partch’s 43-tone microtonal octave scale, demonstrating her expertise in extended techniques and alternative tunings. Her recordings include credits on the Babylon Berlin (Original Television Soundtrack), Cloud Atlas (Original Soundtrack, 2012), and numerous albums from the groups she has participated in. Recently, Ms. Suzuki has bridged performance and composition as Ginka Mizuki, but remains focused as an interpreter and collaborator. She often premieres new works and joins innovative projects that blend genres and cultures. When not performing or composing, Ms. Suzuki enjoys being a foster parent to two cats, Chicken & Noodle, practicing the tea ceremony (certified associate professor of the Omotesenke), training in Shotokan karate (3rd degree black belt), and baking bread and Japanese sweets.
