Chicago for Chicagoans Chicago for Chicagoans is a nonprofit history organization offering pay-what-you-can tours and events Come learn about your place in space!

The mission of Chicago for Chicagoans is simple: educate residents about the history of the places and spaces that they inhabit. We host lecture events, give neighborhood walking tours, and create educational history programming on a pay-what-you-can basis. All of our content is created in partnership with Chicago historians, neighborhood residents, small businesses, and local nonprofits, with the intent of helping all Chicagoans learn more about their own city in an accessible and affordable way.

Sunday 🏡 it’s the LAST tour of our 2026 season!

Join guides Charlie Ocasek and Olivia Sobieraj for a walking tour of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood.

📍Beginning at Holy Name Cathedral, the tour will cover the history, architecture, and landmarks of Chicago’s most illustrious enclave for the wealthy elite. Discover how this storied community sprung up from the ashes of the Great Fire, becoming home to famous soapbox debates, powerful Chicagoans, and ornate homes by the likes of John Welbourn Root and Frank Lloyd Wright.

As time went on, the area also saw the rise and fall of Pl***oy Magazine, whose evolution, successes, scandals, and architecture have long been tied to the broader history of the neighborhood it once called home.

Sunday 🚂 Join us in Pullman with longtime collaborator and neighborhood resident Ms. Bea! Ms. Bea is an artist, historian, and local tour guide focused on educating others about the overlooked contributions of African Americans throughout history.

📍Beginning right in the middle of Arcade Park, the tour will cover the history, architecture, and landmarks of the Pullman neighborhood.

Learn about the community’s development by George Pullman and the Pullman Palace Car Company, discover labor history - from massive worker strikes to the lasting impact of the all-Black Pullman Porters, and gaze with wonder at the iconic Solon Spencer Beman architecture of Hotel Florence, the Blackstone Church, and streets resplendent with red brick row homes.

If you’ve never visited Pullman before, you’re in for a treat... and if you already feel familiar with the area, Ms. Bea’s decades of lived experience in the community is sure to highlight a side of the story you’ve never seen before.

Head down to the neighborhood early to grab an afternoon pick-me-up at Pullman Club Coffee, stick around after the tour to taste all the delicious sweets on offer at Richard’s Ice Cream Shop, or simply spend some time with your fellow tour-takers exploring the exhibits inside the Administration Building.

Saturday 🌻 Join us in Norwood Park to explore this picturesque neighborhood with Matt Weiss! Matt is an urban planner and avid bicyclist who’s excited to showcase this little-known area of the city, where his family has deep roots.

Beginning at Norwood Park Metra Station, the tour will cover the history, architecture, and landmarks of this distinctly-shaped enclave located on the city’s far northwestern edge.

From the (contested) “oldest house in Chicago,” to countless historic churches, glamourous turn-of-the-century homes, unusual street layouts, and business cooridors filled with old-school, mom & pop businesses, this adventure promises to show even the saltiest old Chicagoan something new.

🍁 The afternoon will end at beloved, locally-owned, fall-themed October Cafe, where participants are encouraged to join the group for delicious beverage or tasty treat!

Sunday 🌻 Join our BRAND NEW tour of Morgan Park, led by area resident Cristen Brown! Cristen is a local history enthusiast and architecture obsessive drawn to singing the praises of the unsung, and highlighting the many ways South Siders in particular have managed to make the ordinary extraordinary.

📍Beginning at the 111th St. Metra Station, the tour will cover the history, architecture, and landmarks of Morgan Park.

You’ll discover how the area transformed from a remote enclave where 19th century horse thieves would hide their stolen goods, to a quaint commuter suburb built up along the railroads, to a neighborhood divided by the construction of I-57 in the mid-20th century. Since the 1880s, Morgan Park has also been home to a significant number of Black families, who persevered through racially restrictive covenants, the de facto segregation of neighborhood schools, and countless other challenges.

The afternoon will end with a visit to the Ridge Historical Society, where participants are encouraged to join the group to explore the historic mansion and dive deeper into hyper-local Southside history.

Saturday ⛵️ Join our BRAND NEW tour of Hyde Park, led by area resident and native Chicagoan Alia Savage! Alia has spent her entire life exploring the city’s neighborhoods, parks, public art, and cultural institutions with her history-loving family, and is excited to showcase the way Chicago’s grand ambitions show up in everyday places.

📍 Beginning in front of the western entrance of the 63rd Street Beachhouse, the tour will cover the history, landmarks, public art, and evolution of this iconic city neighborhood.

From the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, to multiple expansions by the University of Chicago, to the city’s ongoing lakefront & nature conservation projects, Hyde Park is ever-changing. Come discover hidden neighborhood gems off-the-beaten path, Yoko Ono’s first permanent public artwork in the Americas, and fresh perspectives on this historic neighborhood through the lens of a local who’s seen decades of change firsthand.

The afternoon will end near the new Obama Presidential Center, where tour-takers can poke their curious heads inside, or grab an early dinner at nearby Truth Be Told Tavern.

📍Beginning at the Clarke-Ford House, this tour covers the historic Prairie Avenue and the many nearby landmarks including:

🔹 Sultry tales of Chicago’s original nepo babies

🔹 The city’s Victorian brothels
