The Focus Word For Today Is:
Who Reigns?- As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.-2 Chronicles 26.5–
King Uzziah’s reign over Judah began well. He sought the Lord, conquered enemies, restored important buildings, improved the agrarian economy, and built a superior fighting force. But something devastating happened along the way— Uzziah developed a conceited spirit. Though his early achievements were initially centered around a healthy, reverent relationship with God, later “ his heart was so proud that he act corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord”(2 Chronicles 26:16). Instead of looking to God for direction and success, he barged into the temple— where only the priests were allowed— and burnt incense, dedicating the holy act that represented prayer. And the Lord punished him. Excessive pride turns our attention away from God and to ourselves. It puts our focus on our own efforts, where “I” reigns instead of the Lord. If you found yourself increasingly centering on your goals, your reputation, your authority, you are success, your talents, your progress, your dreams, take a moment and evaluate where God is in your life. Is He on the throne, or are you? King Uzziah is a cautionary example for you— it never ends well when you attempt to take the Lords place or think you can make your own rules. Humble yourself and get back on the right track. Today’s Prayer: Jesus, please examine my heart and purge whatever pride You find. Amen.
