The Tech Unicorn

The Tech Unicorn Sign up for my newsletter and get the latest on all the latest tech and diversity news! Although, the road was tough, Jamila had to make her own way.

Jamila took her love for computers and video games to DePaul University where she studied computer graphics and animation. Being a Chicago native from the south side and a Chicago Public Schools student, there were little to no resources to prepare her for the advanced and vigorous curriculum at DePaul University, School of Computing. On this journey, she saw very few students that looked her, as

she navigated her career the she saw even less reflections of herself. Jamila uses her story to encourage and motivate young students to pursue a career in STEM. Jamila has been deemed "The Tech Union" because unicorns are hard to find, but once you find one they are unique and special. As a woman of color in a male dominated tech industry, her purpose and passion is to make the road easier for those that follow in her footsteps. She wishes to see more tech unicorns all over the world!

🦄✨ Today, I joined a global network 🌎 of over 1,800 Obama Leaders . It has been an enlightening and exciting journey.

I am deeply grateful to be surrounded by such inspiring, purpose-driven changemakers who are committed to making a difference in their communities and beyond. This experience reminded me that leadership is not a solo journey. I had the privilege of walking alongside 99 incredible leaders who challenged, supported, and uplifted me every step of the way.

A heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at the Obama Foundation Vandinika Shukla Justin Knoll Grace Johnson, M.S. Kiah Williamson for creating a space that nurtures growth, connection, and impact. I am walking away from this experience more inspired than ever to continue building, leading, and empowering others.

Thank you President Obama and Mrs. Obama for illuminating the path for future leaders to follow ✨ Your legacy of hope inspires me each day.

Here is to the journey ahead 🦄✨

🦄✨In honor of Women’s History Month, I’m excited to share that Chicago News Weekly - CNW just published an article featuring The Tech Unicorn! Link in bio!

This mission is deeply personal to me, expanding access, visibility, and opportunity for underrepresented founders and students in tech. If you have a moment, check out the article and learn more about the vision behind the work.

Grateful for everyone who continues to support and believe in this journey. Thank you for telling our story so beautifully!

What if? 🦄✨I’m focused on putting my energy where it can do the most good, where it’s truly needed, and where I can create real impact. The world doesn’t need more noise… it needs intention, courage, and all of our magic.

This is the moment to show up fully. We need every gift. Every voice. Every light. 💫

As we approach the conclusion of Women’s History Month, it’s essential to recognize that women’s history never ends! Reflecting on my experience at the AnitaB.org Responsible AI forum, the closing remarks resonated deeply with me through this poignant poem shared by Betsy Tong

“Give your daughters difficult names.
Names that command the full use of the tongue.
My name makes you want to tell me the truth.
My name does not allow me to trust anyone
who cannot pronounce it right.”
—Warsan Shire

The event shed light on the idea that some aspects are beyond AI’s comprehension. With great power comes great responsibility. Engaging in profound discussions and exploring thought-provoking concepts was truly enriching. Above all, the camaraderie and exchange of ideas among fellow passionate AI enthusiasts were truly invigorating. Leah Koshiyama Nina Idemudia, AICP Shijuade Kadree (she/they) Donna Aaron, MBA, CSDP Pratiksha Shirsat Emma Bloksberg-Fireovid (B-F) Gina Grant

Heartfelt congratulations to Brenda Darden Wilkerson and the entire Anita Borg Institute team for orchestrating a successful, impactful event that sparked meaningful dialogue and community engagement.

🦄✨Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges: Empowering Women in STEM

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women in STEM — innovators, leaders, and changemakers who are shaping the future.

At The Tech Unicorn, we’re committed to empowering women and girls to thrive in tech. By providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities, we aim to close the gender gap and inspire the next generation of trailblazers.

Today, we encourage you to take action: mentor a young woman, advocate for equity, and amplify the voices of women in STEM. Together, we can build a world where women don’t just participate — they lead, innovate, and thrive.
