In the spirit of Puerto Rican Day Parade, do you know when and where the first Puerto Rican Day Parade took place in the United States?

The first Puerto Rican Day Parade in the United States was held on April 13, 1958, in New York City.

It was organized by community leaders, most notably Gilberto Gerena Valentín to celebrate Puerto Rican identity and heritage. The inaugural event took place in Spanish Harlem (El Barrio), marching from 116th to 96th Street, after organizers were initially denied a permit to use the Fifth Avenue route used by other ethnic parades at the time.

Following its success, the parade moved to Fifth Avenue the following year and eventually transitioned to its current timing on the second Sunday of June in 1962. In 1995, it was officially incorporated as the National Puerto Rican Day Parade to reflect its growing significance across the country.

What are your fondest memories of the Puerto Rican Day parade?
