"There is no greater purpose than service to others." - Socrates
Reach Out Community Center N.F.P. (ROCC) is a 501c3 organization started by Dorothy Flisk in 2008. It is located on Chicago's West Side in the South Lawndale neighborhood, which, unfortunately, suffers more than its share of crime, poverty and gang activity. The 17,000 square foot building that will eventually house Reach Out Commun
ity Center needs extensive renovation to bring the building up to code and to be a place where South Lawndale's kids can feel safe and excited to learn. Thanks to the Chicago 10th District Police station, Reach Out Community Center (ROCC) offer after school and summer programs. Once we are able to open our doors at the Troy Street location, ROCC will work with kids between the ages of 6-17. The after school programs will offer a variety of introductory programs in shorter increments, which allows children to explore many different types of activities like photography, cooking, music, history, and theater. Classes will focus on one particular activity, but in a more extensive way than the "sampling" the after-school program will offer. Reach Out will allow the youth to choose their own classes, and all classes will teach skills in logical steps while adapting to the individuals child's and small group's respective learning abilities. The programs offered at Reach Out will give children skills they will utilize throughout their lives, not to mention important lessons about patience, practice, and confidence in themselves. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP BEFORE WE CAN EVEN OPEN OUR DOORS TO THE MANY KIDS WHO NEED OUR SUPPORT. Until now, Reach Out has depended on extensive fundraising efforts to purchase and demolish the building that we hope will someday be the crown jewel of South Lawndale's community. But now, our need is greater than ever. Will you help us help kids? Even if you can't give money, we are in need of materials and labor to help rehab our building. Every bit helps us help others.
