This year, CFA Society Chicago celebrates its Centennial anniversary, marking 100 years of professional excellence in financial services. As we commemorate a century of rich history, we salute the individuals and organizations that paved the way and made the society what it is today. One such story is longtime society supporter and legendary Chicago investment firm Morningstar.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, Morningstar is one of the most influential firms to provide research, data, and insights for the global investment management industry. The firm was founded out of a one-bedroom Chicago apartment by industry veteran Joe Mansueto, who grew the business into a global powerhouse that eventually became a public company in 2005. As Chicago’s third largest employer of CFA charterholders, Morningstar has always been a strong supporter of the society including its current CEO, Kunal Kapoor, CFA.

Early on, Morningstar led the way in responding to the need for independent research apart from investment banks. And today, the firm continues to do pioneering work on some of most significant topics in investment management, such as the blending of public and private assets.

This year, CFA Society Chicago celebrates its Centennial anniversary, marking 100 years of professional excellence in financial services. As we commemorate a century of rich history, we salute the individuals and organizations that paved the way and made the society what it is today. One such story is industry titan and society member Richard Ennis, CFA, co-founder of EnnisKnupp.

Richard joined Chicago financial services firm A.G. Becker in 1975, which was widely regarded as the birthplace of institutional investment consulting. There, he played a significant role in a time of great transformation for pensions and university endowments, which had become more active in equities due to ERISA legislation (1974) but often lacked adequate investment knowledge and expertise at the time.

In 1981, Richard co-founded investment management consulting firm EnnisKnupp, which quickly built a strong reputation for working with pension funds to measure results and performance. Richard inspired multiple generations of younger professionals to pursue the CFA exam, become Charterholders, and be active volunteers and leaders of CFA Society Chicago. Along the way Richard was awarded a Graham & Dodd Scroll Award from CFA Institute, and received CFA Society Chicago’s Hortense Friedman Award in 2016.

As we commemorate a century of rich history, we salute the individuals and organizations that paved the way and made the society what it is today. One such story is longtime society member and leader Gary Brinson, CFA, founder of legendary Chicago investment firm Brinson Partners.

A true industry titan, Gary came to Chicago from the West Coast in 1979 to lead First Chicago Investment Advisors as Chief Investment Officer, which spun out of First National Bank of Chicago in 1989 to form Brinson Partners. Gary led the firm alongside fellow society leader and future CFA Institute CEO Jeff Diermeier, CFA, building a reputation for superior asset allocation and results. Gary is also widely recognized as a pioneer in real estate and alternative investments with a clear focus on fundamentals and value.

Brinson Partners was acquired by Swiss Bank Corp. in 1994, and Gary went on to become the Chief Investment Officer. And now for more than 25 years, Gary has continued to give back as the Chairman of The Brinson Foundation, advancing the priorities of education and scientific research.

Thank you to Gary Brinson, CFA, for his legacy, and his lasting contribution to the society and the investment profession!
