🇺🇦35 years since the revival of
Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

On September 19, 1991, an official order was signed to revive Kyiv-Mohyla Academy on its historic grounds as an independent Ukrainian institution of higher education - Kyiv-Mohyla Academy National University.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of that decision.

Behind the revival was an ambitious and courageous vision, driven above all by Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky, who turned away from a political career to devote himself to rebuilding the Academy as Ukraine's first non-Soviet university.
For the early 1990s, many of the changes introduced at Kyiv Mohyla were groundbreaking.

The university was among the first in Ukraine to introduce admissions based on testing, establish mechanisms designed to prevent traditional bribery in admissions, and adopt Ukrainian and English as languages of instruction.

And there is a great story about how the university got its first space in Podil: Bryukhovetsky reportedly won it in a blitz chess game against the head of a naval academy.

To mark the 35th anniversary, Ukrainian media Babel published a long-form biographical profile of Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky, Honorary President of NaUKMA and the driving force behind the Academy's revival.

Greetings on Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day!

As Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence, we celebrate with pride, gratitude, and an unwavering belief in Ukraine’s future.
The war continues, and we are deeply saddened by the latest Russian missile attacks on civilians and by the lives lost in the defense of freedom. Every day brings new challenges and painful losses, including within our own Kyiv-Mohyla community. Yet even in wartime, Ukraine continues to live, to educate, to innovate, and to build for the future.
This summer, graduates begin new chapters in their lives, and incoming students arrive with their goals, ideas, and dreams. Summer at Kyiv-Mohyla is a season of admissions, summer schools, research, new academic programs, and expanding international partnerships - all signs of a university, and a country, moving forward.
The Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America continues to stand firmly beside the University, supporting students affected by the war, veterans returning to education and civilian life, academic initiatives, and programs that invest in Ukraine’s next generation of leaders.
We are proud of the accomplishments of Kyiv-Mohyla alumni who are serving in Ukraine’s Armed Forces, leading in government positions, developing Ukraine’s economy, educating a younger generation, representing Ukraine at international platforms. Read about some of them in this newsletter.
On this Independence Day, we especially thank our friends, donors, partners, and the Ukrainian-American community. Your generosity and steadfast support have enabled us to continue this work during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history. Your support is not only helping Kyiv-Mohyla endure the war - it is helping prepare the people who will shape Ukraine’s future.
As we celebrate 35 years of Ukrainian independence, we remember those who gave their lives for Ukraine, honor those who defend it today, and place our hope in the young Ukrainians who are already preparing to rebuild and lead their country tomorrow.

Випускницю Могилянки Любов Галан призначено заступницею міністра оборони України.

Любов Галан здобула освіту у Києво-Могилянській академії, отримавши у 2017 році ступінь бакалавра, а у 2019 році — магістра історії. Крім того, Любов є правозахисницею, співзасновницею та головою правозахисного центру для військовослужбовців Принцип, а також співзасновницею благодійної організації з допомоги війську Frontline.Care. Її діяльність отримала високе суспільне та державне визнання: у 2023 році Любов увійшла до списку Forbes Україна «30 до 30: Творці майбутнього» та до списку лідерів «УП-100», а у 2024 році була нагороджена відзнакою Президента України «Золоте серце».

На посаді заступниці міністра Любов відповідатиме за розвиток та збереження людського капіталу Сил оборони. До її ключових обов'язків належатимуть забезпечення ефективного комплектування, зрозумілого кар’єрного зростання, якісної підготовки особового складу, охорони здоров’я, а також соціального захисту військовослужбовців і їхніх родин. У фокусі її роботи також буде створення правил, які чітко визначають права й обов’язки військових та захищають їх від свавілля, щоб зробити систему міністерства швидшою і ближчою до потреб Сил оборони.

Сама ж Любов зазначає, що ця робота є великим викликом і водночас продовженням її діяльності: «Останні роки разом з іншими небайдужими я працювала над тим, щоб проблеми військовослужбовців не залишалися окремими історіями, а могли бути вирішені системно. У серці роботи цієї інституції має бути інтерес воїна та його / її родини. Протягом усього їхнього шляху».

Асоціація випускників Могилянки щиро вітає Любов з призначенням та зичить наснаги, мудрих рішень та сил для реалізації всіх задумів!
