Fred Mitchell Award

The Fred Mitchell Award is given to an FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA place-kicker who excels on the field and in the community.

Fred Mitchell was a longtime (1974-2015) Chicago Tribune sportswriter who was a record-setting placekicker. The Fred Mitchell Award is handed out annually from among 750 eligible colleges for the most outstanding kicker from an FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or community college. The trophy is presented during the National Football Foundation ceremony to the placekicker who excels on the foo

tball field and in the community. The award is named after Fred Mitchell, an award-winning sportswriter with the Chicago Tribune for more than 41 years who kicked for Wittenberg University and is a member of the school's athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the American Football Kicking Hall of Fame.

This year's winner, Aidan Ellison of North Central College, is shown here volunteering at the "Feed My Starving Children" food kitchen in Aurora on Saturday with his parents. Aidan has been volunteering since high school.

Terrific lunch on Saturday at Harry Caray's 7th Inning Stretch Restaurant in Water Tower Place with 2025 Fred Mitchell Award winner Aidan Ellison from North Central College. Aidan was joined by his parents and girlfriend as he placed a replica of his trophy in the Chicago Sports Museum display case. Then FMA chairman Matt Cotiguala and I met him at Clark and Addison where the Cubs posted a congratulatory message on the Wrigley Field video board. Aidan will officially be honored on Monday during the National Football Foundation ceremony at Halas Hall.

Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks for winning the Super Bowl over the Patriots Sunday night. I am especially happy for Seahawks kicker Jason Myers for setting a Super Bowl record with five field goals and 17 points for the game. Myers was on the Watch List for the Fred Mitchell Award in 2012 out of tiny Marist University in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. After going undrafted, he is now the Seahawks franchise's all-time leader in field goals.
