In 2001, the Torch Trail was launched during the summer, inspired by our school insignia, the Gear-Torch. It has become a meaningful tradition that powerfully encourages students, staff, community members, and especially alumni to support their alma mater.
Participating isn’t just about taking a walk; it’s a nostalgic journey down memory lane. Originally, the trail involved laps around the school, but the following year, it expanded to Jesse Owens Park across the street, a location many alumni hold dear. The name was inspired by Ms. Sandra Lumpkin of the class of 1982, who was motivated during lunch when she noticed our school insignia.
This inspiration led to organizing a 5K with fellow alumni, aimed at supporting our athletic programs and providing scholarships for graduates entering college or trade school.
It’s remarkable to see how much this event has grown since its inception. Although there were some gaps after 2001, each year we have committed to making it better. This was our 4th 5K, and it was an extraordinary day!
