On Ukraine’s Independence Day, we celebrate not only the freedom Ukraine has fought so fiercely to defend, but also the people who continue to shape its future.

At Ukrainian Catholic University, independence is lived through education, courage, service, and faith. Every student who learns, every professor who teaches, every graduate who serves, and every member of the UCU community who gives back is helping build a stronger Ukraine.

Today, we honor those who have sacrificed to protect Ukraine’s freedom and look with hope toward the future they are fighting to make possible.

May an independent Ukraine continue to flourish, and may its future be shaped by a generation guided by truth, dignity, and purpose.

🇺🇦 Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!

What does Perelaz mean?

In Ukrainian villages, a perelaz was a simple stile built into a fence that allowed neighbors to easily cross from one yard to another. More than a pathway, it became a symbol of friendship, hospitality, and community.

That same spirit comes to life at our annual Perelaz Folk-Gala—an evening celebrating Ukrainian culture, community, and the mission of Ukrainian Catholic University.

Enjoy Ukrainian cuisine, signature cocktails, live music, inspiring speakers, and an auction. There will also be a supervised children’s program available. Parents can enjoy the speakers and conversation while their children take part in fun, age-appropriate activities.

Whether you're celebrating your Ukrainian heritage or discovering it for the first time, Perelaz is a welcoming evening for the whole family.

🎟️ Early bird pricing ends September 14. Reserve your tickets today: https://trellis.org/perelaz-folk-gala-in-philadelphia-2026

At Ukrainian Catholic University, students are encouraged to transform ideas into solutions that can create meaningful impact far beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to UCU students Olena Azarova and Anna Monastyrska, whose healthcare startup, developed through the Ideas Center at UCU, will be presented in the United States to experts and potential investors.

Their Patient Relationship Management (PRM) platform is designed to improve communication between patients and rehabilitation specialists. Following their successful project pitch, Olena and Anna earned the opportunity to participate in a two-week entrepreneurship program at the University of Notre Dame and received $25,000 in Amazon Web Services credits to support the continued development of their innovation.

Through opportunities like the IdeasLab program at UCU’s Ideas Center, UCU equips students with the skills, mentorship, and global connections needed to become entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers who contribute to Ukraine’s future and the global economy.

💭 “We need to think at least 100 years ahead.”

In an interview, UCU Business School Founding Dean Sophia Opatska argues that Ukrainians must look past immediate crises and plan at least 100 years into the future.

Through strong global partnerships, she actively works to reshape international narratives about Ukraine and advocates for continued support. She notes that Ukraine's future economic survival will rely on local businesses adapting to strict European standards, embracing digital innovation, and remaining open to a global workforce.

UCU Foundation wishes to congratulate our dear friend and generous donor Stephen L. Hyde, who was recently honored by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware.

The Monsignor Thomas J. Reese Award was presented as part of a ceremony hosted by Catholic Charities and His Excellency Bishop William E. Koenig. The dinner drew a large and enthusiastic crowd of Catholic clergy, philanthropists, and lay leaders.

Steve’s many decades of commitment to Catholic education and youth formation have included generous gifts for scholarships supporting various students at UCU. Our Foundation is especially grateful to Steve as he continues the legacy of his late father, Lawrence Hyde, who also contributed generously to UCU during his lifetime. We have received many letters from UCU students thanking Steve for the impact that his scholarship gifts have had on their lives and their academic careers.
