One year ago this week, Girls Are p.e.a.r.l.s. hosted our first Saturday session with 8 girls at Gary Comer Youth Center. It's been an amazing first year! As an educator, I know how important education is both inside the classroom and out and we have been fortunate enough to grow and transition to an organization that supports growth in both areas. Service, exposure and authenticity are our focus and our drive. Thank you to everyone who has supported p.e.a.r.l.s. by attending events, partnering with us, liking and sharing our posts. This is just the beginning and we're so happy you're here with us!

On Saturday, September 5th, Girls Are p.e.a.r.l.s. had the pleasure of putting on a Back to School event with KIPP Academy Chicago and Taco Sublime. Thanks to generous donations from Touch Gift Foundation, Imperfect Produce, Aurora Interfaith Pantry Burst Into Books and Native Tongue Magazine, we were able to provide the community with over 700 pounds of produce, 150 bags of pantry items, essentials including soap and deodorant, books and FREE tacos. We also registered community members to vote! A great time was had by all and we can’t wait until our next Girls Are p.e.a.r.l.s. Presents event!

Girls Are p.e.a.r.l.s. has been blessed to connect with some amazing people and organizations to be able to provide food to hundreds of families! Last week our school community lost a beautiful young girl named Jaeda. I had the honor and pleasure of teaching her this past school year and I'm heartbroken by her passing. No mother should have to bury her child and I can't imagine what her family is going through. I hurt so bad for her family and for Jaeda and I wish I had done more to support her.

A GoFundMe has been setup in her honor. If you have the means to donate, I know that Jaedas family would be grateful. Please keep her family and our school community in your prayers.
