Elastic Arts is looking for our next Visual Arts Curator. This one-year residency is designed for someone looking to start, grow, or refresh their curatorial practice. The space offers artists a unique opportunity to present work to hundreds of people each week, many of whom do not attend other galleries or museums, and to present work that responds to a very diverse range of audiences. The Visual Gallery Curator at Elastic Arts will be responsible for planning, programming, and coordinating visual art for the gallery area at Elastic Arts from mid-October 2024 through September 2025. Beyond selecting the artists, the Visual Gallery Curator is responsible for ensuring artists sign necessary contracts, install and de-install shows, create/gather support materials for promoting events, producing opening receptions, and various other tasks as needed to fulfill their residency requirements. In addition the Visual Arts Curator writes a critical essay/review/interview for their shows to be included in the quarterly Graphic Notes newsletter published by Elastic Arts.

Should you have any additional questions regarding the residency, please email [email protected] or head to the link in bio more info and application.

Books4cause opened its Avondale doors in recent years as Chicago’s first free bookstore. The organization’s initiatives helped to create over 118 libraries in Africa while repurposing and recirculating books and textbooks, expanding a gift of literacy to all while avoiding landfills. Here in Avondale, the bright and sunny space invites a conversation with neighbors and a place to discover literary treasures together. Art by

We are showcasing some of the houseplant books available at Rooted—scroll back to previous posts if you missed any! This next book is one that we keep coming back to: Decorating with Plants, by Baylor Chapman, .

In Decorating with Plants, Baylor Chapman walks readers through everything they need to know to bring houseplants into their home. First, there’s Plant Care 101: from how to assess light conditions to tricks for keeping your plants alive while on vacation, Chapman gives readers the simple, foundational info they need to ensure their plants will thrive. Then she introduces us to 28 of her favorites—specimens that are tough as nails but oh-so-stylish, from the eye-catching Rubber Tree to the delicate Cape Primrose. Finally, she guides readers through the home room by room: Place an aromatic plant like jasmine or gardenia to your entry to establish your home’s “signature scent.” Add a proper sense of scale to your living room with a ceiling-grazing palm. Create a living centerpiece of jewel-toned succulents for a dining table arrangement that will last long after your dinner party. From air purification to pest control, there’s no limit to what houseplants can do for your home—and Decorating with Plants is here to show you how to add them to spaces big and small with style.

Rooted is now open with extended holiday hours!
Wednesday - Thursday: 1pm - 6pm
Friday: 1pm - 7pm (enjoy holiday music, refreshments and in-store specials from 5pm - 7pm!)
Saturday: 11am - 5pm
