It was 2015. I wanted to give up. I was nervous. Constant setbacks. The smell of my wetsuit gave me high anxiety on any given day walking past my closet storage. Heck, I was now having a ton of fun seeing elephants, visiting Baja for snorkel trips, maybe I would never scuba dive again.

Then came 2020 and I was blessed to link up with Gina Kiefer and her husband, when at the time, we were on similar dive skill levels. And with the pandemic, what else was there to do but dive, dive, dive every weekend if possible to really zone in on those skills, get more familiar with equipment and see if I could fall in love with scuba diving again.

And I did.

Coming back to this present day, I'm so glad I did not give up forever. In fact, every dive makes me fall in love with the "sport" more and more. Given the fact that on any given dive you don't know what amazingness you will see underwater, things that most people do not get to see or experience, with each dive I feel like "what's next"? Where can I go next, what further skills can I acquire. I am now ready to prepare myself for anything and everything.

Fear is temporary. Life is short. Feelings are just feelings and will dissipate if you just push through them. It's well worth it in the end.

This year, I will be working on a wildlife documentary, Crash Course. The film will go over the plight of birds in their quest to complete their spring and fall migrations. With bird strikes being a big killer, when birds crash into windows and perish, we HAVE to take responsibility to make their course up and down the U.S. safer.

I'll be looking for bird migrations in the area, sightings, really, anything great that you see that you should think should be included. This is a yearlong project so the entire year should have so many moments! I'm looking to find our regular backyard feeders (if you have a yard with a lot of "visitors", I'd love to come film it!) to the unique birds that come through. If you know of an area with a lot of bird strikes, also let me know as this is important to capture. I will be working with the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors and the Field Museum throughout the year.

I will also be starting a gofundme for the project as I'm currently a one-woman show here and production will have some back costs including potential entrance fees, transportation, equipment, etc. More to come on that.

And if you have a love for filming our feathered friends or like editing and production, I'd like to include you on the team. Projects are always way more successful that way!

Zebras and Wildebeest! Ever wonder why they hang together?

Food – Grass Length

One reason is that Zebras love to eat the taller grass and Wildebeest the shorter grass – it’s a kind of symbiosis. There is no competition regarding food and everyone is happy.

Warning of impending Danger

Also, Wildebeests have the better sense of hearing, while Zebras can see very well. It’s always great to have an ally that can warn you in case of any impending danger.

Safety in Numbers

Another reason is that Zebras and Wildebeests love the open African savannas – in comparison to Kudus or other antelopes that prefer the thicker bush. Being out in the open obviously makes these two antelope species very vulnerable – therefore they are teaming up and are best buddies.

M3, a monarch butterfly I'm currently rearing, had his modeling moment this past weekend? What do you think?

Some interesting facts about these amazing creatures:

🦋 They taste with their feet via sensory hairs on their legs and feet.

🦋 They smell with their antennae.

🦋 They do not have a mouth but have a proboscis which is like a straw they can sip through.

🦋 Most generations live only a few weeks. However, the last generation migrates down to Mexico in the fall and lives several months!

.
ENVIRONMENTAL GENERATIONAL AMNESIA

The idea that each generation perceives the environment into which it's born, no matter how developed, urbanized or polluted, as the norm. And so what each generation comes to think of as "nature" is relative, based on what it's exposed to.

More frequent and meaningful interactions with nature can enhance our connection to -- and definition of -- the natural world.

"There's a shifting baseline of what we consider the norm. Each generation inherits a new baseline for what nature is, and what "normal" surroundings are.

Important information when communicating the importance of conservation with other generations, and working to connect them. This is why media and storytelling are so very important.

What are your thoughts, especially of your childhood?
