Beginning January 1, 2022, I witnessed countless loved ones become ancestors. By last July I was not only ill, but grief stricken which led to depression. My healing led to isolation. There were a few people who were so concerned that I had to accept their phone calls or visits, but for the most part my phone and doorbell was silent. In February my solitude was interrupted by a still quiet voice I knew very well telling me to get up, there was work for me. I immediately began a consulting project, increased self-care, and learned how to say "no" when needed and found I had a lot more time to do things I didn't have time for in the past. I learned my circle had decreased significantly. I found my peace and happiness. Song of Solomon 1:6 makes it clear. I'm minding my own vineyard. 😉

Short trip yesterday, but fun! Yusef Harris and ALKEBU-LAN IMAGES BOOKSTORE allowed visitors to the DuSable Museum to take a bit of knowledge home. Yusef deserved honor for all he did as he created the "Knowledge Center" and hit the road as "Bookman". He sold books seldom seen anywhere else. His motto was "Knowledge is Power". The installation of his Memorial Plaque allows those who pass by can step into the store and learn about this incredible man and see the merchandise that resembles a department store. I had to be there!

Six years ago today, Ron and Patsy Stallworth visited DuSable Museum. Ron is the author of The Black Klansman. He wanted to discuss his book, but.... He circled back in route to the Academy Awards where Spike Lee actually won, Best Adapted Screenplay in 2019. Ron and Patsy were including a free screening of the movie to no avail. So many missed opportunities, but I had a ball!

Happy 28th Birthday to me! September 6, 1996, my right cerebral artery split into two due to an aneurysm. God clotted both ends allowing me to gain super intelligence, empathy, love and in time forgiveness for anything. I celebrate this special day because despite my desire to die, God wanted me here for His purpose. I'm often accused of not listening - I listen, but only to Him. His will must be done. Y'all know where to bring the cake!

I'm assessing the past 60 years of my life today. Did I take advantage of the opportunities denied my ancestors or did I shrink back to Jim Crow or other enslaved mindsets. From 9 years old to 69 did I make my parents proud?

Yesterday I witnessed the sunrise after a trip to Weber's Bakery. I was filled with so much AWE that I came home, made a cd and shared my cherry cheese coffee cake with a neighbor I had not spoken to in 10 years. God will reconcile even when you don't intend to. 🤣 Let it go because if He does it you will pay with your favorite coffee cake or more. 😘

I knew a little, but I now know more. History must be shared. Thanks Big Al. We are living the results of buried knowledge. Greatness must be earned through hard work and perseverance.
George Washington Carver had a difficult start in life. Born sometime around 1864, his father died shortly before George's birth, likely from an accident when he was out hauling wood. And only weeks after birth, slave traders kidnapped George and his mother. Rescued would not be an apt term; recovered is more appropriate. But the group sent out to find him and his mother exchanged a horse for the young boy. His mother, however, was lost to the traders. Less than two months old, and George was already an orphan.
Often sick, frail, he was not expected to live. But live he did, and from a young age, he showed much devotion to work and a desire for learning. He was curious, and as he'd roam the woods near the Carver home, exploring flowers, trees, rocks, and birds, he began asking questions about their purpose.
While much of his education early on was self-motivated, he began formal schooling at ten. He learned of a school about eight miles from the Carver home. And without any money or a new home, he left the Carver's to attend this school, living in an old barn while doing odd jobs to earn money to survive. Eventually, he was adopted into a family there.
Education for George would continue through completing a Master's Degree in agriculture from Iowa State University in 1896. After which, he took a job as Head of the Agricultural Department at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
George was also an artist. At the age of 30, Carver gained acceptance to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he was the first Black student. Carver studied piano and art.
As an agricultural scientist and inventor, his goal was to help farmers improve their lives by earning more from their crops. He found hundreds of uses through his research of peanuts in particular and other products such as sweet potatoes and pecans. His work was instrumental and impactful. Between 1915 and 1918, acreage for peanut cultivation grew from half a million to over four million acres.
After George passed away in 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a message that said: "All mankind are the beneficiaries of his discoveries in the field of agricultural chemistry. The things which he achieved in the face of early handicaps will for all time afford an inspiring example to youth everywhere."
