One family. Five stories. Mariam never finished school and learned it's not too late. Grace walks for water. Moses finally sees the world clearly. Esther keeps hope in her pocket. And Uncle Josphat learns to grow food from dry ground. They're fictional, but their stories hold pieces of real families in Endao. All five books are linked in the first comment.

What God Didn't Tell Me About Being A Missionary, Ep. 4: He didn't mention the milk. πŸ₯› In America, one whiff of sour milk and the whole gallon went down my sink, sometimes a FULL gallon, straight down the drain. Then I moved to Kenya and discovered mala: fermented milk, sold in stores, on purpose, and beloved. My housekeeper used to choose it over soda. I have been here years and I still can't do it. Some things about me remain stubbornly American, and God just laughs.

Meet Esther. She's four years old, and she keeps a small stone from the dry riverbed in Endao as her token of hope. That river has been dry for a generation. Esther believes anyway. Her story, Esther's Gift, is Book 5 of the Endao Gift Series: Hope & Living Water. Some days a four-year-old teaches us how to hope. πŸ’›

I'm finally off bed rest. πŸ™Œ This week I went back to church, rode in a car for an hour, and walked into a shop to pick out my own things. After weeks stuck at home, that felt like a gift. And while my body heals, a new team is stepping in at GOFK. Seasons don't ask our permission. We only get to choose how we walk through them. Today's blog is about both. What season are you in?

Meet Josphat. In Endao, dry land has always just been the way things are β€” until someone showed him a different way to work the soil.

There's a particular weight in knowing your family's next meal depends on ground that won't give what it used to. Josphat's story is about discovering that the land can be worked with, not fought against.

Josphat's Gift is Book 4 in our Endao Gift Series, reflecting our Regenerative Farming pillar β€” so families don't just survive a season, but build something that lasts.

This week you've met four of our Endao Gift characters β€” each tied to a piece of GOFI's mission: WASH, Education, Health, and Regenerative Farming.

Meet Mariam. She never finished school herself β€” but she learned it's never too late to learn something new.

I've sat with women here who carry real grief over an education they never got to finish, quietly believing that door closed for good. Watching Mariam walk through it again β€” as a grown woman, as a mother β€” is one of the most tender things I've witnessed in this work.

Mariam's Gift is Book 3 in our Endao Gift Series, reflecting our Education pillar β€” because learning doesn't have an age limit, and neither does hope for a family's future.

Meet Moses. As a baby, he couldn't walk β€” not because of his legs, but because he couldn't see clearly.

Imagine watching your baby fall behind every other child his age, with no idea why β€” and no way to find out. That's the quiet fear so many mothers here carry, long before any diagnosis, any answer, any relief.

Moses' Gift is Book 2 in our Endao Gift Series, reflecting our Health pillar β€” because sometimes the simplest care, like a pair of glasses, is the difference between a child being left behind and a child finally running free.

Meet Grace. Her story starts with something too many children in East Africa live every day β€” a walk for water so long, it often costs them the whole school day, not just a late start.

Some mornings, it isn't water before class. It's water instead of class. That's not a hardship children choose. It's one they carry so their families can simply have something to drink.

Grace's Gift is Book 1 in our Endao Gift Series, and it's also why WASH β€” Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene β€” is one of GOFI's four pillars of impact. Clean water isn't just survival. It's the difference between a child making it to class, or missing it entirely.

Today's blog tells more of her story β€” link in first comment.

I know exactly how far this dream is from where we are today. A Family Impact Center in every community will take more than GOFI alone β€” partnership with the governments already working to educate these children, recognition so every diploma is honored, and years of building together, one community at a time. But I've learned something in Kenya and Uganda: a dream this size isn't supposed to happen quickly. It's supposed to happen faithfully. Brick by brick. Community by community. Child by child. This week, I shared the whole dream with you. Thank you for reading it with me. πŸ’›

A dream doesn't stop at childhood. I have a dream that the same center where children learn to read in the morning becomes a place where their mothers and fathers learn a trade in the afternoon β€” real vocational training, turning into real income, real dignity. And that no family has to choose between a meal and school fees, because three meals a day are simply part of what a Family Impact Center is.
