The ISAFS advocates for the advancement and excellence in legal investigations involving crimes against animals. The association promotes the application of the forensic sciences and veterinary medicine to instances of animal crime, animal abuse, neglect, fighting, and death through forensic science education. The organization provides educational resources for veterinarians, attorneys, legal investigators, law enforcement officers, and animal welfare organizations engaged in the investigation and prosecution of cases involving animal crime.

Former NFL player LeShon Johnson was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for operating a large-scale dogfighting enterprise. Federal prosecutors presented evidence that Johnson had bred, sold, and trafficked hundreds of dogs for fighting since at least 2007, despite a prior dogfighting conviction in Oklahoma in 2004. Authorities seized nearly 200 dogs from his property, the largest number ever seized from a single individual in a federal dogfighting case. The case highlights the scale, organization, and criminal activity that can underlie organized dogfighting operations.

Severe infectious disease can sometimes mimic neglect. Affected animals may be thin, debilitated, or have significant muscle loss despite having adequate access to food.

In forensic investigations, determining whether poor body condition is the result of inadequate care, disease, or a combination of factors requires a thorough veterinary examination and careful interpretation of the evidence.

Myiasis is the infestation of living tissue by fly larvae (maggots)—and not all cases of myiasis are the result of neglect. Why is this important?

The first confirmed case of New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in a horse in the United States has been detected in southern Texas near the Mexican border. To date, the current outbreak has primarily affected cattle, making this finding in a working ranch horse particularly important.

Veterinarians and animal owners should remain vigilant and be on the lookout for suspicious or unusual cases of myiasis, particularly in animals with wounds or lesions that appear inconsistent with routine fly strike.
