John Whalen, Parks Planner for Elgin Rec. Equipment and Parks, is pictured displaying a new park project, Randall Ridge. We presented him with our first donation of $6,000 for a piece of special needs playground equipment for Randall Ridge. Our club received a $1,000 grant from the Kiwanis International Children's Fund to assist with this project. Whalen tells us Elgin has over 70 parks and over 1,200 acres of property.

On August 12 Andres Dies (Executive Director of Food Greater Elgin) described his vital organization. This organization serves over 150,000 food-insecure individuals in Elgin with a staff of 10 and 1,300 volunteers. Among this great number of people served, it is notable that nearly one-half only visit the pantry twice in a year. The need for food in Elgin is increasing every year.

August 5 featured U-46 teacher Lisa Holbrook, leader of the Elgin High School Key Club. Lisa has led this group for two years under the sponsorship of Elgin Kiwanis Golden K. Now 24 students, they support and work at local charitable events, recently the Fox Valley Flea Market and the Dundee Community Supper. We are so proud of these enthusiastic youth as they are helping to serve the community.

July 22 featured Jennifer Davis, founder of Davisware, Inc. speaking on crypto currency. Jennifer mentioned her wonderful background as a mom of 10, an entrepreneur, and as a candidate for Illinois’ 8th Congressional District. She explained that it's worth knowing about digital currency because almost inevitably it will be the financial system for the future. On July 15th we enjoyed hearing from Maria Nino, an ECC student who graduated last May. Maria shared a moving story - arriving in Georgia from Mexico at 16 years of age and starting a wonderful family. Moving to the Elgin area, she achieved her GED and created an education club to encourage other students. Finally she achieved her goal last year and set an admirable example for her children. We thank Maria for sharing her story with us.

Our July 8 meeting featured Bert Lancaster and Cy Mikleson of Midwest Restoration and Dave Bros of Railside Citrus Insurance. Bert was a fire chief for South Elgin and offered helpful advice for anyone who might face major damage due to fire or other disaster. Midwest Restoration helps victims even if they don't make a purchase. We learned that restoration might take as long as one year and victims need to take care they are properly insured for their loss and temporary housing. Dave Bros presented several home insurance hot topics: roof coverage, flood insurance, condo or HOA insurance, and delays due to local ordinance law.

On July 1 we featured Ross Thomas, manager of Culvers on McLean Blvd. When Ross started as a young man in Dairy Queen, his 99 year-old mom suggested he move on. Later he followed his dream to success, obtaining the Culvers location in 2020. Covid times were very difficult, but he survived with great support staff and, still at this time, has members with him. They did have a ribbon-cutting on their McLean location in 2023 thanks to Carol Gieske.

Our Golden Kiwanis group was invited to join Kane County Clerk's Office on Friday June 26th for a "behind the scenes" tour that focused on voter education. We did have about 11 members and/or spouses who attended. It was beyond what we expected. They have the most secure voting system. It should be followed by every county, and maybe every state. It was a very eye-opening hour spent with true professional staff. Kane County should be very proud of the team they have built. A sincere thank you to all who made it possible.

On June 24th we welcomed Catie Early, Grants and Development Coordinator at PADS of Elgin. Caitie offers a superb background with Children's Theater, Steel Beam Theater, and the Ecker Center for Behavioral Health. PADS provides emergency housing, meals, showers, laundry, and comprehensive case management for men, women, and families experiencing homelessness in Elgin, Hanover, and Dundee townships. Current capacity is 30 spaces.
