Hello Adventurers!

Just an announcement, we’ve had to go on break due to our lead handler needing time to take care of personal business, and because of the weather making all the animals snuggle up for the season!
We’ll be back to posting fun and educational content in the new year!
Enjoy your holidays!!

‼️ Wildlife Spotlight ‼️

Let’s talk spiders!

Barn spider, cat face spider, garden spider, A. gemmoides.
These are a common sight in Canada and the US.
The big ones you see (like this specimen) are female, while the smaller and hard to see ones are the male.
Traditionally these spiders rely on camouflage to keep them safe, spreading their webs and tucking away until the dinner bell rings.
These spiders are completely harmless to humans, and are very beneficial to have around as they’ll feast on any insect that lands in their web. Especially common “pests” like flies or mosquitoes!

Orb weavers, like this one, have multiple kinds of silk! Using different types for different tasks! The scaffolding of their webbing is made from one type, while a completely different type gets lain over the top to make it sticky! They have another kind for wrapping food, and another kind for making their egg sacs! In total they have SEVEN different types of silk. More often than not they will consume parts of their webs, recycling the silk as well as consuming the moisture.

Here at Meet The Menagerie we have a special soft spot for orb weavers of all kinds!
If you are fortunate enough to see one of these ladies, let her do her thing!

P. catenifer
“Bull snake”
“Gopher snake”
“Pine snake”
Or sometimes “Ahh! A rattlesnake!”

A native species to the American West, and a very important one. These guys are great at helping us manage rodent populations, and have been seen climbing to eat birds as well. Though solitary the majority of the time they do group up in burrows for the winter.
This sweet babe got stranded in a parking lot using a car for shade, waiting for dark to move to safety. I got called out to help, and after a good long drink of water and a looksee for injuries they were released into a shaded spot nearby in some tall grass.
While these guys can mimic rattlesnakes as a defense (they wriggle their tails and hiss) they are non venomous and are usually pretty easy to handle. Scooped this one up with no issues.

Good luck kiddo!
