The Davissa Ranch Horse Refuge The Davissa Refuge is a non-profit horse refuge ranch that provides a permanent home for senior retired, displaced or abandoned horses.

Davissa Ranch Horse Refuge provides lifelong sanctuary for retired, displaced, and abandoned horses honoring their dignity through compassionate care, veterinary support, and a peaceful place to simply be horses. The ranch is a 501c non-profit and as such does rely on donations, volunteers and the community to continue this important work. All horses on the ranch are given a lifelong home and are

not re-homed, sold or adopted. When they arrive here they are home and all that is ever asked of them is to simply be a horse.

I am gonna say something here that is probably not going to get me a lot of warm fuzzy comments but... I don't care, it needs to be said and I'm saying it anyway. Part of what we face in the world of rescue/refuge work is a mentality that makes horses nothing more than a commodity or asset. A tool to be used up and then discarded. Sometimes that is hidden in false care and then eventually the colors show..... The following are two separate posts made by someone in NE trying to sell a horse. The first post was made in late April, the second made today. Oh how the "thoughtful consideration" has left the conversation now....... First post "After thoughtful consideration we are offering" and now today that same operation has posted the same horse saying, "Need him gone and out of our way." This horse was used as a stud, now they no longer need him so....... they need him "out of the way." If you can't make a commitment past the "useable life" of the animal, don't have it. What if we treated people that way.... oh wait, some folks do. If we had 20k acres, I would help so many more of these old souls "get out of the way" of the people who no longer want or use them. Sometimes people really do disappoint me to my core!!! I'm thankful that we can offer a place for these old souls. Folks need to not only do better but BE better!!! Our boy Jack (pic below) agrees.........

We are incredibly honored to share that The Davissa Horse Refuge has once again been nominated for Cap City’s Best of the Best 2026.

Over the past two years, this community has blessed us by voting the refuge “Best of the Best,” and we truly cannot express how much that support has meant to us, the horses, and the work being done here each day.

This little refuge was built simply out of love for old working horses and the belief that they deserve peace, dignity, and lifelong care.

If you would be willing to support us again this year, we would be deeply grateful. You can vote daily, and every vote truly does help.

Thank you, Cheyenne, for continuing to love these horses alongside us. ❤️🐴

**For immediate release, please read and share**

Over the past several years, we’ve quietly committed ourselves to the daily care of the horses here at The Davissa Horse Refuge. It’s work we take seriously, and we’re grateful for those of you who have supported and encouraged us along the way.

This morning, we received notice of an immediate and significant increase in our hay prices, along with limits on how much can be purchased. While we understand why these changes are happening, it does create an immediate and meaningful impact on the cost of caring for the horses.

To be direct, this is a situation where we will need some help.

We don’t often come forward in this way, but the reality is that feed is not something that can be delayed or reduced. The horses depend on it every day, and we remain committed to providing them with the consistency and care they deserve.

If you have ever thought about supporting the refuge, we would be grateful if you would consider doing so at this time. Your support will go directly toward helping us meet these increased feed costs and continue steady care through this season.

We are hopeful that conditions will improve as the new hay season comes in, but for now, this is a place where our community truly makes a difference.

Thank you, as always, for standing with us and for being part of what we’re doing here. A link to our donation page is in the comments.

There’s an important difference between horsemanship and horse management, and it’s worth understanding.

Horsemanship often centers around the use of the horse.
Riding, training, performance, and the working relationship between horse and rider. Those things matter when a horse is in a working role.

But underneath all of that is something more foundational.

Horse management is what sustains the horse.

It’s the daily care and long-term stewardship that ensures their well-being, nutrition, health, safety, soundness, temperament, and mental stability. It’s not about what the horse can do. It’s about what the horse needs.

These aren’t secondary considerations. They are the core of a healthy horse.

At The Davissa Horse Refuge, our focus is on management.

Our horses are in permanent retirement. They are no longer asked to perform or carry expectation. Instead, they are given consistency, proper care, and a safe, stable environment for the rest of their lives.

Because long before a horse is ever asked to perform, and long after they are done, it is the management of that horse that determines the quality of their life.

From time to time, we like to share a little glimpse into the lives of the incredible horses who now call The Davissa Horse Refuge home.

They come to us from many different backgrounds, jobs, and circumstances. Each one is a unique soul, full of personality, and it is truly a privilege to care for them and to be part of their forever.

Today, we’d like to tell you about Maximus (PO 501 Ret)

Maximus is a 17-year-old bay gelding who came to us after being retired from service with the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office. He is a fully credentialed deputy who served our community with devotion, discipline, and heart.

These days, his life looks a little different, and a little slower.

Maximus enjoys at least two well-earned naps a day, plenty of time with visitors (especially those who come with treats and know just the right spots for scratches), and the simple gift of just being a horse.

He is one of the many reasons this work matters so deeply.

What we provide here is more than a place for horses to be. It’s a place for them to truly live. A life marked by care, kindness, purpose, and dignity.

And for Maximus, that chapter is just as meaningful as the one he gave in service.

** Edited for clarification** This post was meant to share with our fellow horse community that we have to be vigilant. Over the past two weeks we have had some neighbors who have gone out in the morning to find some tails and manes cut. It happens every year, usually in the spring and we were just reaffirming what we've said in years past. We all have to look out for each other and be watchful.

Over the past several months, there have been concerning incidents reported on farms and ranches in our region. While we won’t speculate on specifics, we do take these matters seriously and remain attentive to what is happening around us.

At The Davissa Ranch Horse Refuge, the safety and protection of our horses is a constant and top priority.

This is a private, closed facility. Access is by appointment only. The property is gated and access is controlled. We maintain active, 24/7 camera surveillance covering all areas of the ranch, and the property is routinely monitored in person. Our horses are checked multiple times daily and are never left without oversight.

We are intentional about maintaining a secure environment and are not an open-access property.

This refuge exists to provide lifelong care, dignity, and protection for the horses entrusted to us. We will continue to uphold that responsibility with vigilance.

We appreciate the respect of our boundaries and our privacy as well as the security and safety of our herd.

This morning was such a blessing.

The sunrise was incredible, but even more than that… gathering together in His name, sharing in His love, and rejoicing in a risen Savior—it was everything.

We were reminded that the story didn’t end at the cross. In many ways, it began at the empty tomb.

Hope is real. Love is real. Peace is real. And they are ours because we are His… and He is in us. A living, loving God.

Have a beautiful day, my friends. Be blessed. ✝️
