So excited to start working with Maple Leaf Foods on this new challenge! Special thanks to D'Arcy Finley, Maple Leaf Foods' VP of Marketing, for joining our team last night to go over the brief. We can't wait to put our best effort towards this case, as well as preparing for the National AMA Case Competition in December!

This week we are featuring Dr. Gerald Smith as our BC AMA Faculty Spotlight. Dr. Smith is the Chair of the Marketing Department here at Boston College, and is currently teaching a graduate course on Strategic Price Management, though he has taught undergraduate, graduate, and executive courses throughout his time at Boston College. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Marketing Association, and was even the faculty advisor for the original Boston College AMA chapter when it started in 1995.

Dr. Smith started his career in marketing in the early 1980s, working as a marketing consultant before he joined Parker Brothers (acquired by Hasbro) to work as a Brand Manager for the Star Wars video game! He later transitioned into a role as Director of Marketing at Kurzweil Music Systems. It was at Kurzweil that Dr. Smith began to teach night classes at Bentley University, before deciding to attend Boston University to get his PhD.

His journey with Boston College began in 1991 when he started teaching courses such as Marketing Principles, Pricing, and Brand Management. Dr. Smith was first Department Chair from 2004-2012, and has resumed the role from 2018 to the present. While Dr. Smith works on building out new features such as analytics and digital marketing in the department, he is also very active in consulting and research with several companies.

As for advice, we asked Dr. Smith what kind of advice he would give to current marketing students. Learning to be a go-getter, and utilizing your professors for both academic and professional help was his top answer. In terms of the best skill a marketing student can have, Dr. Smith believes in the importance of programming and analytics as technical skills. His final piece of advice about the college experience in general is also his life motto; “Life is about relationships.”

Why join BC AMA? Our founding chapter president, Jenn Downing (CSOM ‘20) tells us why she decided to bring AMA to Boston College.

“The American Marketing Association Boston College was created out of a need to provide students at BC with more hands on resources and tools to prepare them for a career in marking.”

For our first ever Member Spotlight, we have our Chapter President Katie Hamlin. Katie is a rising junior from the class of 2022, and is studying communications and minoring in marketing. Katie chose to join Boston College’s chapter of the American Marketing Association because she was looking to apply classroom education to real world marketing situations, as well network with some of the best marketing professionals in the industry to help her jump start her career. This summer, Katie interned with Havas Media/Arnold Worldwide, where she gained insights into working at an advertising agency, as well as a media company.
Katie’s favorite BC AMA experience was the 2019 collegiate case competition. It offered her the opportunity to work in a small group of dedicated BC business students to offer a company a marketing strategy for a significant pain point. She also enjoyed the ability to compete against thousands of colleges and universities on a nationwide level. As for favorite BC Marketing courses, Katie recommends Marketing Principles with Professor Kerbs. She enjoyed the class primarily because Professor Kerbs made the class applicable to students’ daily lives, while teaching the basics of marketing in an engaging way.
Looking to the future, Katie is super excited for the spring BC AMA event “A Day in the Life at Cybba,” where BC AMA members will shadow marketing professionals who work at Cybba, a digital marketing company. As Chapter President, Katie has a lot of great insights on the upcoming year. “While our semester at BC this year is hybrid, we still have a lot of incredible events and speakers planned! AMA is also offering various online training due to the virtual nature of this year which is a great opportunity to learn about something new while developing your marketing skill set.” Katie recommends joining BC AMA if you’re interested in gaining relevant skills, getting to network with some of the best marketing professionals, and having a great talking point on your resume that makes you stand out.
