The Carter Society The Carter Society seeks to honor those early Carters who came to the Virginia Colony and their famil

The following chapters have been established within the Society based upon those Carter patriots of Colonial Virginia who have known living descendants:
Giles Carter I of Henrico County
John Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Lancaster County
Thomas Carter I of Isle of Wight County
William Carter of Surry

Incorporated as a non-profit heritage organization, the Carter Society offers a unique opportunity to come to know those who share a common heritage, a common interest, and a common goal. The Carter Society is a corporation led by a Board of Directors who are elected at the annual meeting and serve for a term of two years, or until the next election. Officers are elected by the directors at the first meeting of the Board of Directors following the annual meeting, and serve concurrently with their directorship. The principal officers of the Society are the President, Secretary, and Treasurer, although the Board may also elect one or more Vice-Presidents, Assistant Secretaries, and Assistant Treasurers, as necessary. Committees may be appointed by the President, except the membership committee, which is elected by the Board.

We were thankful to Marilyn South, Grace Harper and Gordon White at Christ Church Middlesex. The first church stood here in 1666 and the current church was built in 1712. Significant interior renovations took place in the 1908’s to keep the church functional. The Carter connections marry, baptize and decease with the Skipwith, Chucheley, Kemp and Wormeley families. The graves of Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell Puller and wife, Virginia Montegue Evans, were visited as well.

Yesterday we also toured the beautiful Georgan-style Clifton Estate, hosted by Kevin and Stacy Noll. Along with continuing to restore and preserve the home, they also have a lavender farm (Two Bees Lavender) on site! The home was built in 1785.

A big thank you to Kevin and Lisa Carter and Ann Carter for welcoming us back to Bondfield. The property was given to Mary Bond Edmunds Carter and James Carter I by her aunt, Caty Bond. The land has been with the Carter family since 1806. The current home was rebuilt over the first in 1840.

Ammon Dunton Jr., and daughter Mary Blair Dunton Zakaib, graciously hosted our group to tour his home. Verville, known to have been built on land owned by Major Edward Dale and gifted to his daughter Katherine and new husband, Thomas Carter. He was granted lifetime membership as a Friend of the Society for all of his research of the property and contributions to Lancaster County.

We received a very special presentation from Anne Clewell on the community and architectural historical significance and evolution after the Revolutionary War. They brought out silver communion pieces (1669 and 1690) for view. The baptismal font is original as are some of the outer building bricks. The Carter’s, Fox’s and Ball’s all had balcony seating.

Today we began our tour with Karen Hart of the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society. We toured the old courthouse, the new Dunton Library for Genealogy and History, the Mary Ball Washington Museum and the Jail and County Clerk’s offices.

Registration for the Reunion and our room block ends August 15th! Those staying at the Quality Inn - 599 North Main Street in Kilmarnock, VA 22482 Book directly by calling them at (804) 436-1500 in the rates under our block "The Carter Society."

The rates for the rooms are: Double Queens - $125.10 + tax, Kings - $127.30 + tax. The actual reunion dates for attendance run September 16-20, 2026. We extended the rate to start on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 for those wishing to come early.
