Equality starts with education. 📚✨

This , we are highlighting a powerful truth: research from the Institute for Family Studies shows that one of the strongest indicators of a child's academic success is their mother's reading level.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also shares that having a high school diploma makes women 20 percent more likely to hold employment than someone without. Going on to finish a bachelor's degree makes them nearly 40 percent more likely to be employed.

When we empower women with literacy, we set up the next generation to thrive. Investing in adult education builds stronger, more equal communities.

On World Humanitarian Day, we pause to recognize the global community of people working tirelessly to defend fundamental human rights.

Humanitarian work takes many forms. At Delco Literacy, we observe this day by reaffirming our belief that literacy is essential to human dignity. It is with a heavy heart that Delco Literacy shares the passing of Patricia (Pat) Gaul.

From 1984 to 2005, Pat served as Executive Director of the Delaware County Literacy Council. She was a tireless champion of adult learners at the local, state, and national levels and served for many years on the board of Laubach Literacy Action, now ProLiteracy. In 2002, she was named Pennsylvania Adult Educator of the Year. Pat generously gave throughout her whole life and even played an instrumental part in us moving into our current home in Chester at 2217 Providence Avenue.

Pictured below is Pat, as well as Pat's daughter, Phyllis Corkum, who also worked at Delco Literacy, alongside Karen Hamilton, a longtime staff member who had the privilege of working with both Pat and Phyllis. We are deeply grateful to Phyllis for inviting friends and family to honor Pat's memory through gifts to Delco Literacy. Over $1000 in donations have already been made to Delco Literacy in memory of Pat.

Thank you, Pat, for all the lives you have helped grow over the years. You will never be forgotten.
