We learned the hard way that this patio install is more about slow, steady, follow the system than it is about speed. We are about halfway done. I’m so thankful for the help this morning! We got old plants out and cleaned up, fresh compost on the rows, and getting ready for the fall crop to go in!

Our pepper plants and okra are still producing abundantly as we start to shift our garden to cold weather plants even in the 80+ degree heat. 🤗

Coming to these rows: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, brussel sprouts

This is one of the parts of gardening most don’t see! I’m here cleaning a pruning the THOUSANDS of garlic and onions that have now cured for storage so we can give them to families each week as long as possible! And I’m still amazed at the SIZE of some of these!! 🤣🤩. Next year I hope we have a proper storage facility for our crop and we can do this together as a team!

This patio project has already been a longer labor of love than we expected. Challenges?? I think all of them. BUT, it’s well on its way and will be the heart of the garden community gathering. We will have a place out of the mud for the amazing people who come help us make this possible. We will have shade for the nursing moms who have other children in our garden classes. We will have a peaceful place to enjoy cup of coffee in the early morning hours. It will be more than worth the long hours putting it in. And we are thankful to the Empowering Youth to Serve team for donating the materials and offering endless labor to make it possible!!!

There have been MANY long days and nights working in the garden to get a task done in time. And many times we have gotten caught in storms or worked until the rain told us to go home.

But tonight a storm picked up SUDDENLY! We ran under the shelter expecting it to slow down enough for us to clean up and run to the car without it pouring on us. Instead we narrowly made it out before the shelter collapsed on us! 🫣😳😭. Thank God we are safe!! But our shelter may not have any life left in it! OH NO!!!! We will have to examine it in the morning 😢

We are picking every day now and filling up baskets of amazing fresh okra!! I didn’t know so many people liked okra until we grew it last year and the families who received it gave so much great feedback! So we went bigger this year and now there is plenty to go around!
